At the bottom of a mysterious chasm springs a spring with emerald green waters…

Located in a deep valley, this charming town in the south of France is home to an incredible natural site: the Vaucluse fountain, nestled at the foot of a 230-metre-high cliff. It is here, in this deep and mysterious abyss, that the Sorgue has its source. This outflow, which has one of the largest flows in the world, is accessible via a path along the river. Once you arrive on the outskirts of this emblematic place of Provence, you can only be charmed by the emerald green color of its waters and surprised by the power of its flow, especially during flood periods!

But Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is also its old village where it is good to walk in the shade of the trees. Some activities of yesteryear have been preserved there, such as an artisanal paper mill that makes paper as in the fifteenth century and works with a water wheel. There is also the Cristallerie de la Fontaine, a workshop shop where you can watch the work of glass spinning. As you wander through the narrow streets, don't hesitate to enter one of the local craft stalls to get a glimpse of what is being done in the region. You can also visit the Santon Museum and its impressive collection that will appeal to young and old alike.

In terms of history and heritage, Fontaine-de-Vaucluse has an 11th-century Romanesque church and a medieval castle perched on a rocky outcrop whose ruins overlook the village.

A pretty little medieval town that hides many treasures

In the heart of Provence, very close to Mont Ventoux in the Vaucluse, nestles a delightful little town. Welcome to Pernes-les-Fontaines, whose singularity is to have… 40 fountains! Colossal or more discreet, with mascarons, mossy or sculpted, discover each of them by following the "circuit of fountains" that runs through the city. Among the most beautiful are the Fountain of the Leg or the Fountain of the Cormorant, both dating from the eighteenth century and listed in the inventory of historical monuments.

Pernes-les-Fontaines is also home to a remarkable medieval heritage. The ramparts have remained intact and still have gates, such as the 14th-century Notre-Dame gate, adorned with two towers overlooking the river. On the picturesque bridge that spans the Nesque, you will be surprised to discover a small chapel that dates back to the beginning of the sixteenth century. On the intra-muros side, a succession of cobbled streets, shaded squares and small chapels await you, exuding a crazy charm. The very last vestige of the castle of the Counts of Toulouse dating from the twelfth century, the Clock Tower allows you to admire, from its summit, a fantastic panorama of the Comtat plain and Mont Ventoux. The Ferrande Tower is also a must-see, with its sumptuous 13th-century frescoes that are extremely well preserved, as is the Romanesque church of Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth. As you criss-cross the medieval city, stop to contemplate the beautiful mansions such as those of Brancas and Cheylus.

Lovers of antique linens and Provençal costumes will go to the Comtadin Costume Museum, housed in a former nineteenth-century fabric shop.

Immerse yourself in the Provençal way of life of yesteryear
04 90 72 03 48

Near the beautiful village of Gordes, in Provence, there is a unique place not to be missed: the village of Les Bories and its thirty or so cabins, whose exceptional dry-stone architecture has earned it a classification as a Historic Monument.

Formerly used as seasonal shelters, the bories are small rural constructions, whose dry stones have the particularity of being skilfully stacked on top of each other and holding together thanks to the corbelled vault technique. In the territory of Gordes, nearly 400 bories are listed, whether they are isolated or grouped into hamlets.

Inhabited until the nineteenth century, the village of Les Bories is today a remarkable testimony to the Provençal way of life of past centuries. A veritable museum of rural housing, you can see houses, sheepfolds, bread ovens and wine vats. But also objects and tools from the past.

Several walking trails in the middle of nature, such as the Sentier du petit patrimoine rural or the Bories de la Garriguette, will allow lovers of walks and old stones to complete the discovery of this incredible vernacular heritage.

From the Palais des Papes to the Pont d'Avignon, discover the prestigious traces of its past!

City of the Popes from 1309 to 1376, Avignon in the Vaucluse department is a city steeped in history. Its historic heart is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its old town has preserved an impressive testimony of its past! Protected by ramparts, it contains the emblem of the city. Open to visitors, this superb Gothic monument dates back to the 14th century and consists of the old palace of Benedict XII, built between 1334 and 1342, and the new palace of Clement VI, built between 1342 and 1352. The vast Palace Square is also surrounded by other prestigious buildings such as the Petit Palais, which turns out to be the former residence of the archbishops. Built between the 14th and 18th centuries, this elegant building of almost 3000 m² now houses a museum that exhibits Italian paintings from the 13th to the 16th centuries, such as Botticelli's Madonna and Child, as well as Romanesque and Gothic sculptures. You can also admire the Hôtel des Monnaie and its beautiful 17th-century Baroque façade featuring eagles and dragons, and visit the Notre-Dame-des-Doms Cathedral, built in the 12th century and remodelled in the 15th and 17th centuries. Built in the Provençal Romanesque style, it contains a magnificent Romanesque dome, a white marble episcopal seat, as well as the Gothic tombs of Popes John XXII and Benedict XII. Outside, look up to see the huge statue of the Virgin Mary all gilded at the top of the bell tower.

Then wander through the medieval alleys to admire the old houses, the Renaissance-era mansions and the old squares. You will certainly arrive at the Rue des Teinturiers, a picturesque pedestrian alley paved with pebbles. The Rue de la République, which is very busy, connects the ramparts to the Place de l'Horloge shaded by plane trees, the lively heart of the city with its many café and restaurant terraces. Here you can see the neoclassical façade of the 19th-century town hall and its clock tower, a former 14th-century belfry with a jacquemart clock.

Throughout your walk, linger on the many buildings you will come across. St. Peter's Basilica, whose Renaissance leaves on the façade, the woodwork of the choir dating from the seventeenth century and the pulpit from the fifteenth century are worth a visit. Don't miss the nightly illuminations that sublimate the building during the Helios festival that takes place in the summer. The Gothic-style collegiate church of Saint-Didier has a beautiful 15th-century carved altarpiece depicting the Carrying of the Cross. On the Place des Carmes, the last vestige of a former convent is the Augustinian bell tower topped by a wrought iron campanile. In the church, the painted wooden statues date back to the sixteenth century.

Don't forget to go to the top of the Rocher des Doms which is the very origin of the city. This very pleasant garden is ideal for a refreshing break and offers a superb view of the Alpilles, the Rhône and the unmissable Pont d'Avignon. Made famous by the famous popular song, the Saint-Bénézet bridge, built in the Middle Ages, once connected Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, 900 metres away. Partly destroyed by the successive floods of the Rhône, it still has four arches and two superimposed chapels. A museographic space "The Lost Bridge", as well as touch tablets allow you to discover this emblematic monument as you have never seen it before!

Art lovers will have the choice between several museums: the Calvet Museum, which exhibits collections of fine arts, decorative arts and ethnography; the Lapidary Museum, with archaeology as its theme; the Louis Vouland Museum with its prestigious collection of furniture and objects from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and its works by Provençal artists from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the Angladon Museum, which houses a remarkable collection of modern art.

So much beauty for this village, a true jewel of Provence

Perched on a rocky promontory in the Vaucluse mountains, in the heart of the Luberon Regional Natural Park, Gordes is a typical Provençal village, looking like a postcard. Its picturesque cobbled streets lined with beautiful blond stone houses, its fountains and vaulted passages, and its majestic Renaissance castle that proudly dominates the landscape, have attracted many artists, such as Chagall and Vasarely, who have come to draw their inspiration from it.

Now it's up to you to let yourself be lulled by the charm of this incredible village! Walk through the cobblestones and at the bend of one of them, take the time to stop to admire the different views of the Luberon massif. Near the beautiful village of Gordes, in the Luberon, the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Sénanque is a must-see monument of Provence. Nestled in the middle of lavender fields, in the hollow of a green valley, it was founded in 1148 by Cistercian monks from Mazan, in the Ardèche. Monks who are always present, living in the purest monastic tradition, according to the Rule of St. Benedict. Their days are punctuated by prayer and the work of growing lavender and producing honey.

A true jewel of Provençal Romanesque art, the Abbey of Sénanque is also one of the purest testimonies of early Cistercian architecture. Built during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the abbey church, the cloister, the old dormitory, the chapter room and the heating room are open to visitors. This old medieval fortress majestically dominates the plain of Comtat Venaissin!
La Garenne, Le Barroux
04 90 28 20 02

Once upon a time, there was an imposing castle in the heart of the Vaucluse that faced Mont Ventoux. Dominating the eponymous village, the Château du Barroux was originally a powerful fortress built during the 12th century. It was then surrounded by thick walls and its keep was used as a lookout for possible attacks. Its strategic position between Provence and Dauphiné gave it the status of border and toll. In the sixteenth century, when it became the property of Henri de Rovigliasc, Count of Veynes, it became a very beautiful Renaissance residence, but then suffered deterioration during the Wars of Religion and the Revolution. Not to mention a terrible fire during the Second World War that was only brought under control after 10 days.

Now listed as a Historic Monument and open to visitors, this remarkable building opens its doors to you to discover its attractions and its tumultuous history. It is also an opportunity to enjoy a very nice panorama of the Comtat Venaissin plain!

Its rocks finely chiseled by erosion form an exceptional ensemble!

No, this is not the fabric so carefully worked to give pretty patterns, but a limestone massif from the Vaucluse department! But the name is no coincidence, since the shape of its picks and needles is reminiscent of lace. A long work of erosion that today gives an atypical and exceptional landscape, to say the least. The highest point is the Saint-Amand ridge at 734 metres above sea level.

With its rocky walls, the Dentelles de Montmirail are a delight for climbing enthusiasts. They are also ideal for hiking and mountain biking, which allow you to walk in the heart of landscapes made up of forests, rocks and vineyards, where aromatic plants, holm oaks and Aleppo pines abound.

At the foot of this unique site, take the opportunity to stop in one of the charming villages of the famous Côtes du Rhône vineyards such as Gigondas, Vacqueyras or Beaumes-de-Venise, for a taste break that will delight your palate!

Its old town has preserved from its rich past a beautiful heritage

Famous for its old fairs that attracted crowds from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, the city of Art and History of Beaucaire, located on the banks of the Rhône River and the Rhone Canal in Sète, retains from its rich commercial past many beautiful monuments. Overlooking the top of its hill the historic center, the medieval castle, built in the eleventh century, then partly dismantled in the seventeenth century by Richelieu, was the residence of the counts of Toulouse and the lords of Beaucaire. Today, its remains, which are the polygonal tower, the round corner tower, the curtain walls or the Romanesque chapel, are all testimonies of its glorious era. Within the walls of the castle, in addition to visiting the Auguste Jacquet Archaeological and Historical Museum, a peaceful shaded garden of pines and cypresses, as well as a beautiful view of the rooftops of the city, awaits walkers.

Below the ramparts, the visit of Beaucaire continues with the discovery of its squares and streets lined with old houses and mansions of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Among the latter, let us mention the Hôtel de Clausonnette, the Hôtel de Margallier - or house of the caryatids - and the town hall. Also to discover, the collegiate church Notre-Dame-des-Pommiers baroque style, and the Place de la République, quite charming with its old arcades, pretty facades, fountain and plane trees.

Tourist site
In the heart of Provence, a change of scenery and wonder are guaranteed in an incredible site…

In the Vaucluse, 2 kilometres south-east of the village of Rustrel, superb landscapes are revealed in an extraordinary palette of colours. This is the Provençal Colorado. Now that's a rather atypical name in the heart of the Luberon! And for good reason, it is indeed western landscapes that you have in front of you as evidenced by these old ochre quarries resembling canyons. Formed by erosion and shaped by man over time, they offer a wide range of reliefs. Cliffs, ravines, peaks, caves, promontories… come in different colors ranging from pale yellow to bright red to brown, orange, green and purple!

Two marked walking routes will allow you to discover this incredible site that looks like the Far West: the Sahara circuit which will take you to a unique setting (2.1 km - 40 min), and the Belvederes circuit which will offer you magnificent views of the Provençal Colorado (3.9 km - 1h45). Sahara, White Desert, fairy chimneys are all unusual places that you can admire as you walk. You will also be able to observe an atypical flora, unusual for the region, such as chestnut, maritime pine, heather or broom.

Travel between Antiquity, Middle Ages and the Modern World

A name with an unmistakable connotation as to its Roman past! Located in the Vaucluse, this town has a rich ancient heritage represented by the impressive remains of La Villasse and Le Puymin. Vast of about fifteen hectares, these two sites which testify to the scale and richness of the ancient Gallo-Roman city of Vasio, alone form the largest archaeological field in France! On the Puymin site, the Théo Desplans Museum houses beautiful archaeological collections: marble statues, funerary and everyday objects, frescoes and mosaic decorations. Classified as a Historic Monument, the Roman bridge with a single arch that spans the Ouvèze and connects the city centre to the Upper Town, is another trace of this rich ancient past.

Vaison-la-Romaine is also a very present medieval heritage that you can discover by walking through the Upper Town, after crossing the Roman bridge. Perched on a rock, this picturesque district is protected by a double wall of ramparts and a fortified gate surmounted by a belfry that marks the entrance to the medieval city. As you stroll, you will be able to admire beautiful residences, pretty squares, art galleries, and walk along charming cobblestones that will lead you to an old cathedral from the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries as well as the castle of the Counts of Toulouse. Accessible by a steep path, this ruined building whose origin dates back to the twelfth century offers a splendid panorama of Vaison and the surrounding area from its forecourt!

A fine example of Provençal Romanesque architecture, Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth Cathedral and its peaceful cloister date from the 11th and 12th centuries. Built on an ancient Roman temple of which some remains remain, the church has preserved a beautiful octagonal dome decorated with the symbols of the four evangelists. In the same architectural style, the Saint-Quenin chapel is interesting for its triangular apse of the twelfth century and its rich sculpted decoration.

Before leaving, make a detour to the Jardin des 9 Damoiselles, a poetic and philosophical space with 81 sculpted granite stones! Nine of them represent the nine European Cities of Culture in the year 2000. And on each of them is engraved a sentence by a local poet, both in the original language and translated into French.

Tourist site
A troglodyte monastery

Founded in the fifth century by hermits, then occupied until the fifteenth century by Benedictine monks, the abbey of Saint-Roman, nestled at the top of the hill of the Aiguille, in the vicinity of Beaucaire, has the particularity of being entirely dug into the rock. Unique in Western Europe, this troglodyte monastery preserves remarkable vestiges of its past. This is evidenced by the chapel, which houses the relics of Saint Roman, the cells, the cisterns, the cellars and the open-air necropolis. From the upper terrace, where the ruins of a castle built in the 16th century and dismantled in the 19th century remain, the view of Provence and the Rhône Valley is superb!

Tourist site
A beautiful testimony of Cistercian art

Founded in the 12th century, the Abbey of Silvacane in La Roque-d'Anthéron is a fine example of Cistercian art. It is also the oldest of the Cistercian abbeys in Provence.

Tourist site
A wild and beautiful site, at the foot of Mont Ventoux

At the foot of Mont Ventoux, in the Baronnies, lies a wild site of great beauty, the Toulourenc gorges, rightly considered one of the most beautiful corners of Haute-Provence.

Originating near the village of Aulan, the Toulourenc river has carved deep gorges on the outskirts of the hamlet of Veaux. Accessible via Mollans-sur-Ouvèze, in the Drôme, or via Malaucène, in the Vaucluse, this landscape shaped by nature commands respect!

The Toulourenc gorges are also the scene of rather special walks. Indeed, in summer, the shallow waters allow you to travel along the river, feet in the water, for a few kilometres. Very small beaches where you can stop are also scattered here and there to the delight of walkers.

Perched on a rocky outcrop, the Château d'Aulan, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages, proudly dominates the Toulourenc valley. Still intact, it stands out in the landscape with its towers and high walls.

Tourist site
An impressive canyon with wild and grandiose landscapes!

Located in the Vaucluse mountains, between Monieux and Méthamis, the Nesque gorges offer an impressive spectacle of nature! Along the tourist route, discover a magnificent canyon with wild and grandiose landscapes, whose course is sure to give you some chills. Composed of steep cliffs, imposing rocks and numerous caves, this fabulous natural site in Provence, classified as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, is not to be missed under any circumstances.

Punctuated by tunnels and viewpoints, the road route that crosses the gorge offers extraordinary views, such as the one from the Castellas viewpoint which is located just in front of the monumental Wax Rock. For the record, this name comes from the wild swarms of bees nestled in the rock.

At the bottom of the Nesque gorges is a small Romanesque troglodyte chapel from the twelfth century, accessible by a footpath from the village of Monieux.

Tourist site
Discover the unique landscapes of the giant of Provence!

Culminating at an altitude of 1912 m, Mont Ventoux is recognizable from afar, up to a hundred kilometers around. A symbol of Provence and a majestic site in the Vaucluse, its white limestone summit resembles a real lunar landscape, arousing astonishment and wonder. Not to mention the extraordinary panorama that embraces the Luberon, the Sainte-Victoire mountain, the Nesque gorges, and even the Mediterranean coast when the weather is clear!

But Mont Ventoux is characterized above all by its great climatic and natural diversity. Here there are Mediterranean plants, there are beech and fir forests or there are Arctic plants. This richness has earned it the status of Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Come and discover and observe an exceptional fauna composed of birds, birds of prey and deer.

On foot, by bike or on horseback, Mont Ventoux is a popular site for sports enthusiasts. Hikers have marked trails at their disposal, while cyclists will attempt the difficult ascent to the summit. But what a satisfaction when you get to the top! In winter, snow covers the slopes of the Mont Serein and Chalet Reynard resorts. Skiers will be able to have a great time on the groomed slopes, while snowshoers will be able to appreciate the beauty of the place by criss-crossing one of the proposed routes. In summer, you can get your fill of thrills by taking a devalkart descent on the grassy track of La Lisière.

Avignon, the heart of Provence, is to french history what the Vatican city is to Rome. Situated on the bank of the River Rhône, it looks and feels like the backdrop of a medieval fairy tale. It is famously known for the 14th-century seat of the Papacy and its 12th-century-old bridge. Recognized for its ecclesiastical architecture, and historic importance, the centre of Avignon was designated a unesco world Heritage site. The city has a lot to offer beyond history. You will be greeted by the picturesque views of the river Rhone, plenty of bars, cafés, and restaurants. As you stroll through the streets of Avignon, you will be fascinated by the old alleys, the courtyards, and the restored facades.

You will learn about :

Since the Neolithic period

Bishop of Avignon

Kingdom of Arles

Holy Roman Empire

Avignon Papacy

Kings of France
