Pwani Mchangani Village
Pwani Mchangani Village - Pwani-Mchangani

Weekly visits are arranged to the village to meet the local community. Normally on Monday mornings.

Please enquire at the Guest Relations Office of the hotel near the Reception Lobby.

=======================================

Ocean Paradise Resort is situated on the North East coast of Zanzibar. Since the Resort was opened in 2004 the owners, having visited the village numerous times during the construction of the Resort were interested in giving back to the community, especially the village closest to where the Resort is situated, Pwanimchangani.

The residents of Pwanimchangani are predominantly Muslim and therefore the first project was to build a mosque in the village. This was followed by a school and thereafter a joint project to build a dispensary for the residents.

The Resort works closely with the “Sheha” (The Village Elder) to try and improves the lives of the local Zanzibari's in the village. The aim of the Management of the Resort was to ensure that guests visiting our beautiful Island have the opportunity to see Zanzibar culture from perspective and we introduced free tours to the village as part of our program.

Stemming from this, the Management, having spoken to the “Sheha” identified possible ways in which we could raise money for projects that would benefit the local community.

Maternal Health

The Pwanimchangani Dispensary is the only health clinic available to accommodate just under 6000 residents from the villages of Pwanimchangani and Khandvi. Although there are basic facilities and support for pregnant woman available at the dispensary, many woman are forced to travel long distances to hospitals that specializes in maternal care to deliver their babies. Added to the distance they travel whilst they are in labour, is the cost incurred by them for transport to these hospitals which is relatively expensive. Many women still deliver their babies at home without any medical support.

Taking this into consideration, The Ocean Paradise Community Project, in conjunction with the village of Pwanimchangani built a maternal clinic that opened on 23 December 2013 and handed over to the Ministry of Health for further upkeep and management thereof. The hospital assist pregnant woman from the villages of Khandvi and Pwanimchangani.

Education

There are about 925 children enrolled at the school in Pwanimchangani aged 6-20.

Primary School Children: (ages 6-15) = 669 children

Secondary School Children: (ages 15-20) = 256 children

Education is key in a world that is becoming smaller and more competitive by the day and our hope is to try to find a way to assist the village in improving the existing school that will have a long term impact for the future generations of Pwanimchangani. The school is a highlight for many guests that visit the village and small things such as pens and pencils are normally what the children, if asked, will say they require.

Our focus is to increase literacy rates in the village and arm the children with the tools they will require to succeed which includes computer literacy and languages.

Our long term aim is to set up scholarship funds for children who show potential but are unable to afford further education.

Eco & Social Tourism

Ocean Paradise is committed to supporting the development of the local community. The majority of our seafood is bought from the village fisherman on a daily basis to help sustain the livelihoods of the fisherman practicing an art form that has been on-going for generations. Fishing is the biggest income earner in the village of Pwanimchangani followed by agriculture. Much of our fresh produce is also procured from the village. We also take pride in hiring residents of the village to work with us in positions such as Gardeners, Room Stewards, Cooks and Maintenance.

The Environment

We are committed to playing our part in helping to preserve and protect the fragile environment on our beautiful Island. Water is a precious resource and this is the main reason that none of the rooms at the Resort feature bathtubs. All the water that is used at the Resort is recycled and then used to water the gardens. Plastic water bottles are sent for recycling and we organize a collection at the village for any plastic waste so that it can also be recycled.

In an effort to raise awareness in the schoolchildren at the village, Ocean Paradise in conjunction with the school of Pwanimchangani organizes the children and members of our staff to partake in a beach cleaning exercise to clear our beach of any plastic and rubbish.

The intention of the Ocean Paradise Community Project is not to interfere with the traditions of the local community. The initiative of the project is based on the theory that any projects we participate in with the village are done so with their full support and on the basis that we can effectively hand it over to the Village to run and implement, thereby allowing them to be self-sufficient.

About Stone Town

Located on a promontory jutting out from the western side of Unguja island into the Indian Ocean, the Stone Town of Zanzibar is an outstanding example of a Swahili trading town. This type of town developed on the coast of East Africa, further expanded under Arab, Indian, and European influences, but retained its indigenous elements, to form an urban cultural unit unique to this region.

The Stone Town of Zanzibar retains its urban fabric and townscape virtually intact and contains many fine buildings that reflect its particular culture, which has brought together and homogenized disparate elements of the cultures of Africa, the Arab region, India, and Europe over more than a millennium.

The buildings of the Stone Town, executed principally in coralline ragstone and mangrove timber, set in a thick lime mortar and then plastered and lime-washed, reflect a complex fusion of Swahili, Indian, Arab and European influences in building traditions and town planning. The two storey houses with long narrow rooms disposed round an open courtyard, reached through a narrow corridor, are distinguished externally by elaborately carved double ‘Zanzibar' doors, and some by wide vernadahs, and by richly decorated interiors. Together with, the simple ground floor Swahili houses and the narrow façade Indian shops along “bazaar” streets constructed around a commercial space “duka”.

The major buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries and include monuments such as the Old Fort, built on the site of an earlier Portuguese church; the house of wonder, a large ceremonial palace built by Sultan Barghash; the Old Dispensary; St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Cathedral; Christ Church Anglican Cathedral commemorating the work of David Livingston in abolishing the slave trade and built on the site of the last slave market; the residence of the slave trader Tippu Tip; the Malindi Bamnara Mosque; the Jamat Khan built for the Ismaili sect; the Royal Cemetery; the Hamamni and other Persian baths. Together with the narrow, winding street pattern, large mansions facing the seafront and open spaces these buildings form an exceptional urban settlement reflecting the longstanding trading activity between the African and Asian seaboards. In particular the Stone town's is also marked by being the site where slave-trading was finally terminated.

Golfers have something really exciting to look forward to at Sea Cliff Course by Peter Matkovich
Seacliff Golf Club - Mangapwani
+255 76 770 2241

Golfers have something really exciting to look forward to at Sea Cliff Resort – the new Peter Matkovich golf course is a first on the island of Zanzibar, and will provide a great golfing experience set in a fantastic Zanzibar island setting. The course meanders through tropical bush landscape with gigantic mango trees and palms, borders on a beautiful mangrove swamp, and even contains a stunning coastal low dunes landscape along the ocean on a couple of holes.

Sea Cliff is a nine hole course, but offers a lot more. There are nine greens, but with different tee locations players can have a great 18 hole golf experience. The variety of holes on the different nines – varying in par, distance and angle, will provide golfers with a fun island golfing experience. The course also boasts a driving range and short game practice facility. After their round, golfers can enjoy the sunset from the Clubhouse Verandah, situated on a private beach, soaking in views of the ocean.

The course has a par of 71, with holes varying in length – short to long par 3's, a variety of par 4's including a couple of drivable options (depending on wind direction), and then some fun par 5's, which also vary between longer and shorter, depending on wind direction. As the course is set on the coast, wind will obviously have a great influence on the way the course plays every day, providing golfers with a different course in different wind conditions. The aim of the course was to provide a fun resort experience for players, as well as provide a player friendly course where new players can be introduced and exposed to the game – Zanzibar and Tanzania as a whole is not a country currently associated with great golfers and a variety of great golf courses, but the course at Sea Cliff provides players of all levels with a fun, challenging test, set in an environment which would be described by many as “paradise”. What better way to spend part of your visit – be it leisure or business on this stunning layout, enjoying the best the island has to offer, again, and again…
