Eco-friendly traveling: my zero-waste toilet bag
Soaps and shampoos: I opt for solid!
No more plastic bottles, polluting and sometimes even too big for the trip in question! No more risks of seeing them fall into the kit. Make the choice of a zero waste alternative that will take up minimal space in the toilet bag: the solid soap. Here, a washcloth or a small box of recycled cardboard can be enough to ensure the journey for the most cautious, even if one can be satisfied with a thin sheet of paper.
As for soap, one can opt for home-made production and especially cold saponification. This manufacturing process is carried out at room temperature. Whatever ? Without heating, vegetable oils and natural active ingredients retain all their properties. More ecological than industrial shower gels, the soap is ultimately softer and nourishing for the skin. Less well known, solid shampoo is also worth the detour: less polluting ingredients, less water needed for its manufacture and more sustainable, it's win-win between nature and you!
And for the deodorant too!
The solid deodorant exists too! In concrete terms, how does that work ? Well it is a block that passes under a trickle of water before applying under the armpits. He will then leave a thin layer of cream. The composition is 100% natural with ingredients such as sodium bicarbonate, essential and vegetable oils or white clay to absorb moisture.
Facing perspiration, everyone is not equal so you may need to test several before finding the right model. But then you will be able to say goodbye to the deodorants of supermarkets, the vast majority of which contain aluminum salt (dangerous for health) and sometimes even endocrine disruptors!
And for my smile?
An estimated 4.7 billion non-biodegradable toothbrushes end up in nature each year (according to Brush with bamboo). To remedy this, we can focus on bamboo toothbrushes. Very light, it will slip into the kit much easier than your big electric toothbrush. If bamboo is a plant that is easy to grow without pesticides and of a different species from that of which panda feeds, it nevertheless has a small drawback: the distance involved in transporting it from China and India. Alternatives are gradually appearing but are still quite difficult to find. The plus is to ensure that the bristles of the brush are biodegradable nylon, always to limit its impact on nature. You can even find some types of infused charcoal hair! In these cases, the brush is then completely biodegradable to compost!
This summer is also a great opportunity to abandon the plastic tube and try the toothpaste organic and natural... powder! Say goodbye to titanium dioxide that two out of every three toothpastes in a supermarket, and opt instead for a small box to reload at will. So we can have some doubts about the idea of brushing teeth with powder and yet, all the natural ingredients ensuring a good hygiene are found there, without any superfluous element. And for the most determined of you, you can even make your own toothpaste. There are many recipes that can even adapt to your needs, likes and dislikes.
The dilemma of sunscreen
The sunscreen is obviously a must in the summer. But it also includes its share of pollution: 25% of the sunscreen is diluted after 20 minutes of swimming. It is estimated today between 4,000 and 6,000 tons the amount of cream absorbed by coral reefs every year! But the zero waste has not yet answered everything and this time, we will not advise you this time the home made. If, despite everything, you want to try it, check at least the effectiveness of the ingredients with a dermatologist!
But to protect oneself from the sun, it is also a question of behavior As pleasant as it is on the skin, one can thus encourage to limit its exposure to the sun when it is the most harmful (between 12h and 16h), with a parasol and clothes and expose yourself gradually. And of course, for situations where protection is needed, we can not ban sunscreen but we must be interested in the composition of it. Some labels exist but they still lack official recognition. The first thing to do is at least to exclude all creams including oxybenzone (or BP3) and octocrylene, components officially toxic to the environment. On the market, there are today so-called organic and ecological creams but their effectiveness is sometimes limited and their impact on the environment remains.
Essential oils: my anti-mosquito weapon
No brainer this time as for sunscreen: mosquitoes are an enemy so well known that we now know what they do not like. No need for a large surface spray to protect yourself, essential oils do very well. You can create your own recipe, based on aloe vera, lemongrass and eucalyptus, for example.
We put everything in a bottle reusable wish, it slides into his toilet bag and you're finally ready to go on trips!
