Capital of the Narbonnese Gaul, residence of the Visigothic kings and archiepiscopal city, the city of Art and History of Narbonne, more than 2,500 years old, conceals a rich heritage. At the heart of the historic center, two buildings, classified as a Historic Monument, must be visited : the Saint-Just-and-Saint-Pasteur cathedral and the Archbishops' palace.
Incomplete, the 13th and 14th century cathedral of Narbonne retains an absolutely grandiose choir which, with its 41 meters vaulted ceiling, is the highest gothic choir in the South of France ! In the axial chapel stands a splendid 14th century polychrome stone altarpiece. The Treasury Room reveals a rich collection of goldsmiths, tapestries and liturgical objects. Then take a stroll through the peaceful Gothic cloister, before heading to the Archbishop's Garden, where you can take the time to admire the flying buttresses and the south tower of the cathedral and the facade of the new palace. Seat of the town hall, the Museum of Art and the archaeological museum, the Archbishops' Palace is discovered according to the different parts that compose it : old palace of Romanesque origin, donjon Gilles Aycelin, new palace of Gothic style, Saint-Martial and Madeleine towers. Dating back to the late 13th and early 14th centuries, the donjon offers from its upper terrace a panoramic view of Narbonne, the coast, the Corbières and the Pyrenees !
Nothing better then a coffee break on one of the terraces of the lively Town Hall, before continuing your journey towards the Robine Canal and its charming promenade des Barques, where you will have opportunity to indulge in an electric boat ride.
In terms of museums, Narbonne is also well-endowed, with its archaeological museum housing a remarkable exhibition of Roman paintings, its Museum of Art and History rich in collections of fine arts and decorative arts, its lapidary museum installed in the old church Our Lady of Lamourguier, and the birthplace of Charles Trenet, today entirely dedicated to the famous Fou Fou singing.
There's Joy, every year at the end of August, with the Trenet festival, which showcases French song, through concerts, shows, bodegas and street arts !
