Located in the heart of the village, less than 5 kilometers from the Château de Montaigne.
It is in the first half of the twentieth century that the 4000 m² of the site were cleared, revealing the presence of a vast Gallo-Roman villa accompanied by its private baths with exceptional mosaic pavements.
Visit the remains of this occupied villa from the first century to the beginning of the sixth century.
Stop in particular in the large room whose polychrome pavement has patterns of scales and laurel leaves.
On this listed site, you can also discover the remains of a Romanesque chapel built in the eleventh century with the stones of the villa.
If you want to take a guided tour of the archaeological site of Montcaret, go to the adjoining museum, which houses part of the excavations.

Situated in the Purple Périgord on the Dordogne, the town of Bergerac is famous for its vineyards. Highlights include, in the medieval old town, Pelissière square and its restaurant terraces, Récollets Cloister and the Maison des Vins wine rooms, the Tobacco Museum of National Interest located in Peyrarède house, and the old port with its jetty, where barge trips are offered.
Come immerse yourself in the Middle Ages by attending the great historical spectacle of the Battle of Castillon that ended the Hundred Years War
- before the show
From 18:30, the site is open to the public and the village of Aliénor comes alive for a pre-show full of entertainment. Numbers of jugglers and troubadours, medieval farces, peasant dances, knightly duels succeed one another, either in the amphitheater, or between the stalls of the craftsmen.
Children get introduced to medieval games or cross-bow shooting while their parents can attend conferences, enjoy medieval dishes or winemakers' wines from the "Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux" appellation. We will also learn this year to coin money by making his own crowns.
An open-air restaurant, a self and a picnic area provide on-site dining.
- > Understanding the historical significance of the Battle of Castillon
Perched on a hill overlooking the Dordogne valley, the Château de Monbazillac is a must stop on the Bergerac wine route.
An impregnable fortress in the Middle Ages, then a country retreat during the Age of Enlightenment, the Château de Duras (built 12th to 18th centuries) is today a listed historic monument.
Towering over the Dropt valley, this former residence of the Dukes of Duras contains some 30 rooms showcasing the building's history and past splendour. The visit takes in the Salle des Trois Maréchaux, the dining room with terrace, the Salle aux Secrets, kitchen, bakery, dungeons, wells and Salle de la Charpente.
The basement contains a museum about the archaeology and ethnology of the Pays de Duras area.
Don't miss the superb 360° panoramic view from the top of the tower!
A busy programme of cultural events takes place there throughout the year, including symphonic concerts, plays, art exhibitions and night-time visits.
Bridoire is a private historical monument (XVth century) in the heart of the vineyards of Monbazillac.
Discover 15 rooms furnished on 3 levels: remarkable vaulted kitchen with brass drums, dining room, billiard table, large lounge, guard room, underground prison, king's room and chapel.
But also 100 games of yesteryear for all ages indoor or outdoor: fitting armor, scriptorium, crossbow shooting, reflex game etc...
Not to mention the stables of the 19th century with our horses and ponies!
Perched at the heart of one of the most prestigious Bordelais vineyards, the famous village of Saint-Émilion, while of course being known for its great wines, also boasts an architectural heritage that's remarkable to say the least!
The charming medieval town, standing proudly on its rocky promontory, is a delight for lovers of old buildings, who can stroll to their hearts' content along the sloping, narrow streets dotted with old houses. Lovers of great views should be sure to take a walk up the King's Tower (Tour du Roy)! This imposing 13th-century keep indeed offers a lovely view of the roofs and vineyards of Saint-Émilion. Religious architecture enthusiasts, for their part, can admire the cloister of the collegiate church and its old enfeus (tomb niches), the unusual monolithic church dug out of the rock in the 11th century, or the Cordeliers Cloister with its elegant small columns. As for food-lovers and gourmets, they can enjoy a grand cru-rated wine or delicious macaroons made the traditional way since 1620!
Issigeac is a medieval city that is the exception in the middle of all the surrounding fortified towns. In the heart of its former circular enclosure where the streets wind like a snail, we discover a village of character where alleys and alleyways resurrect the past. A village rich in history and architecture where artists and craftsmen have made their home.
- Picturesque market on Sunday morning, elected 1st market of Aquitaine in 2018

Listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne immediately appeals to the visitors with its beautiful houses arranged as an amphitheatre and dominating the River Dronne. The charming wooden balconies decorating the facades of certain houses add to the picturesque nature of the place.
The village possesses a remarkable historic building, which is quite unusual: the Saint-Jean monolithic church, an underground church carved out of the rock in the 12th century by the Benedictines. This building has a vault reaching 20 metres high and is the biggest troglodyte church in Europe! This site should not be missed under any circumstances!
In the summer, the sandy beach along the River Dronne, below the village, is the perfect place for relaxing and swimming. Water sports fans can canoe and kayak to their heart's content on the River Dronne.
The Vesunna Museum was created on a site where Gallo-Roman relics were discovered by chance. These include the painted walls of a house that was inhabited from the 1st to the 3rd century.
The museum is located in the southern quarter of Périgueux, formerly the Roman capital of the Gaulish "Pétrocore" people who worshipped the goddess "Vesunna", and was designed by the architect Jean Nouvel.
An amazing testimony to the Gallo-Roman era and the Pétrocores' daily life, it invites you on a journey to the time of the Roman occupation by reconstructing the way people lived back then, from forum to temple, from water supply issues to funeral rites, from meals to body care…
The architecture of the site respects the remains of the "Domus of Vesunna", a listed Historic Monument since 1963: the ancient walls are protected by a vast umbrella.
From the high glass walls, there is a spectacular view of the landscaped park around the Vesunna Tower (Tour de Vésone), and the remains of the 4th-century ramparts.
