Capita of Bugey

The birthplace of Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, the famous French gastronome and author of the famous Physiology of Taste, the town of Belley, the historic capital of Bugey and bishop's palace from the 5th century onwards, has a rich religious past. Its neo-gothic style Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, largely rebuilt in the 19th century, has retained the northern door of the old 12th-century cathedral. Boasting a tall bell tower with a porch reaching a height of forty metres, the building contains beautiful 19th-century murals, a 15th-century chancel, an 18th-century marble statue of the Virgin and a reliquary containing the relics of St. Anthelme, Bishop of Belley in the 12th century.

Near to the cathedral stands the old Episcopal palace, an elegant building in the classical style dating from the 18th century, which nowadays contains the municipal library. This pretty park is ideal for a leisurely stroll and offers a beautiful view of the chevet of the cathedral and the roofs of the old town.

Then head to Place des Terreaux, with its 19th-century fountain, and Grande Rue, with its old houses, including the birthplace of Brillat-Savarin and the Hotel du Bailliage, the headquarters of Belley Lower Bugey Tourist Office.

Lovers of regional produce should not miss Belley market, which takes place every Saturday morning on Grande Rue and Place des Terreaux!

Today, there is a memorial to them on the site, in the hamlet of Lélinaz.

In the house's refectory and dormitories, an exhibition evokes the atmosphere of the camp and the refugee children's daily life. You can absorb the atmosphere of the time by visiting the rooms where they lived, and looking at their letters and drawings, as well as portraits of each one of them. A particularly moving experience...

In the barn and the new building, which was inaugurated in 2015 by President François Hollande, there is an exhibition space, a documentation centre and rooms dedicated to educational activities. The permanent exhibition, supported by archives, deals with three themes: the story of the Jewish children of Izieu, the judgment of war criminals and the mechanisms for building memory.

This place aims to ensure history is not forgotten, and is also a site for awareness-raising and education against intolerance and discrimination.

Hike

27, Route du Bout du Lac - Lathuile

Climb to the right of the church of Latheron, towards saury. Take the first left (Mine Road) and keep right. After passing under the power line, the road climbs hairpin right.

Continue straight. Ascent by paved road. Arrive at a crossroads marked "Well of Mine", ancient well of the mine service, whose entrance is located nearby, off-trail.

Turn right and continue uphill. Continue north almost flat and pass small hamlets. Panoramas of the valley and the lake. Follow the signs Entrevernes and Membert.

After Bochettes, turn right and continue down towards Membert.

At Membert, join the paved road.

Shortly after passing under the power line, while the road turns right, take the path at right angles to the left and walk through the meadows to the hamlet of Frepperet.

In the hamlet of La Planche in Entrevernes, with its well preserved watermill, turn on the asphalt road to the right, signs "Membert".

At one house, take the path that leads through the meadows at right angle to the left, signposted "Oratory".

At the oratory, beautiful view of Lake Annecy. Descend to Latheron following the path to the right (narrow and a bit steep). Once in a track (source) incline left on a path. Continue on a small road to the church.

Route de Montgellaz - Lathuile

Go by car to the parking saury.

One hundred meters after the parking, follow the left path that starts at home.

After a few bends, at a large sign, cross the channel to the right on a big stone slab and take the path that runs along the track first. The trail is well marked with yellow markings on a green background and especially by wooden panels (Combe) at each intersection with the many paths.

Note: the layout of trails and paths on the IGN map is not always very reliable.

Always following the direction of La Combe, thus coming under the cliff which is crossed by a gravel path and then cut into the rock (secured by a metal fence).

The route continues in the pasture to the refuge of the Combe cottage farm Carolina where you can admire the pretty cows Hérens.

Continue after the cottage on the track. Twenty meters after the second hairpin, the left path leads to a place called the Platières.

Note: a steeper path to the left of the track prevents the two pins.

The return is effected by the same route.
