A gastronomic destination between the Emerald Coast and the Pink Granite Coast

The prefecture of Côtes-d'Armor lies within a bay that is a listed Nature Reserve and is visited by nearly 50,000 migratory birds.

Its historic centre, a few minutes from the bay, is remarkable : half-timbered houses from the 15th and 16th centuries, a fortified cathedral, the Church of St. Stephen, built from the 13th to the 18th century… The latter is evidence of the town's evangelisation as early as the 6th century, and its commitment to defence, worthy of a castle fort ! You can admire the Annunciation altarpiece from the 18th century, an Anglo-Norman-style choir from the 14th century and an organ from the 19th century with beautiful carved woodwork. The church is based in the old part of town, where there are half-timbered houses, some of which are listed historic monuments.

There are many cultural and sports activities available throughout the year in Saint-Brieuc. These include water sports, walking, mountain biking and shellfish-gathering.

At Saint-Brieuc Art and History Museum, you will find some lovely art and ethnology collections, focussing on underwater archaeology and maritime heritage, slash-and-burn farming, weaving, crafts, etc.

A walk around Le Légué harbour is a must. This is the fifth biggest port in Brittany and hosts a big maritime festival in July. Starting from the Cesson tower, which was once part of a fortress, the "bird path" will lead you to the biggest nature reserve in the region and Valais beach.

As a "European Destination of Excellence" in gastronomy, Saint-Brieuc also invites you to enjoy its local specialities : there are some very good restaurants which you simply must try, as well as the local markets and delicatessens, which are brimming with tasty treasures !

This monastery complex in the Gothic style nestles within a magnificent natural environment
Chemin de l'Abbaye, Paimpol
02 96 55 18 58

Built at the start of the 13th century, the coastal abbey of Beauport is located in the village of Kérity, in the municipality of Paimpol, Côtes-d'Armor. Facing the sea in an unspoilt natural environment, the monastery complex is a listed Historic Monument and its site is protected by the French Coastal Protection Agency.

Shaped by its dual purpose as a place of welcome for pilgrims and a maritime trade centre, the Gothic abbey nestles within a magnificent natural environment, with its rose garden, orchards, marshes and sheltered harbour.

This haven of peace is open to visitors. Built around a cloister, Beauport Abbey includes a church, a refectory, a chapterhouse and cellars, a room dedicated to the lay brothers and another for the guests. The function of the "Duke's Building", located outside of the monastery walls, remains unknown: archaeological digs have unearthed bronze-workers' furnaces. In the 20th century, the building was converted into a cider works.

The abbey become private property after the Revolution. Today, with the support of the Coastal Protection Agency, which protects its fauna and flora, improvements have enabled this superb example of Breton architectural heritage to be opened to visitors.

Enjoy its fishing harbour and marina, its old town and more.

Welcome to Paimpol, the fishing and oyster farming centre of Côtes-d'Armor! This pretty little Breton town, once a peninsula, has been shaped by its maritime past, starting with cod fishing trips to Newfoundland and Iceland. Today, its glory is an oyster: the famous Paimpolaise!

Restaurants are legion in the old town, serving fish specialities, and there are delicatessens specialising in local products. These include the delicious cocos de Paimpol, semi-dried beans with AOC status. These shops sit alongside beautiful ship-owners' houses and half-timbered houses from the 15th and 16th centuries, on picturesque side streets to be explored on foot. The Latin quarter is a maze of old streets that lead to the fishing harbour and marina. On Rue des Huit Patriotes stands a beautiful 15th-century house that is a listed Historic Monument, the Jézéquel House. It has been a hardware shop since 1886. Other sights to see are the Old Tower, part of the old church, and the Church of Our Lady of Good News, completed in 1914.

Three kilometres from the centre is Beauport Abbey, a magnificent, remarkably well-preserved monastic complex that is a Historic Monument and is well worth a look.

A great place for hiking with nearly 60 kilometres of coastal paths including the GR 34, the Paimpol-Goëlo area has stunning panoramas in store for you, including a beautiful view of Bréhat from the Rohou plateau.

Every two years in August, Paimpol harbour hosts the sea shanty festival, a festive and friendly event devoted to sea shanties and old boats.

A pretty little medieval town

This pretty little medieval town in Côtes-d'Armor is on the list of the Most Beautiful Villages of France and is also part of the Small Towns of Character network.

Perched on a hill, Moncontour is still surrounded by its ramparts built in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Its side streets are lovely for a walk, admiring its half-timbered houses and bourgeois residences along the way.

In the 16th century, the town was shaped by its involvement in producing and selling linen. This activity helped it to develop and enabled the construction of several buildings which are now listed or registered as Historic Monuments. They include the Church of St. Maturinus, with its exceptional 16th-century stained glass windows, the presbytery, and many beautiful mansions that belonged to rich traders, like the old Veillet-Dufrêche mansion and the Kerjégu mansion, which is now the town hall.

Notable historic monuments include two 16th and 17th-century houses on Rue du Docteur Sagory, the Clézieux mansion, the Mognet tower and the Faubourg Saint-Jean door.

The floral island off the coast of Paimpol

The Bréhat archipelago, off the coast of Paimpol in Côtes-d'Armor, comprises the main island and 86 neighbouring islets and reefs. Accessible by boat in about ten minutes from the Arcouest headland, this delightful destination is a haven of peace and serenity. Charming houses, wild coves, over 120 bird species, a multitude of flowers, agapanthus, hydrangeas, mimosas, blackberry bushes, aloes, eucalyptus and camellias all contribute to the sense of calm and well-being that visitors find so appealing… especially as you can only travel around the island on foot or by bike! No cars are allowed on Bréhat: to explore it, you can also take the little train around the island or book a guided tour.

Measuring 3.5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide, Bréhat Island has a wild northern part, with the White Tower (Tour Blanche) providing a reference point for sailors, the Rosédo and Paon lighthouses, and the Lenn salt lake. In the south, the most populated part, there are houses with floral gardens and a 16th-century church.

Among its tourist attractions are the Birlot tide mill, made of round stones and pebbles, one of the most beautiful in Brittany; the Bréhat Glassworks, in the old citadel, where you can admire the glassblowers' work; and Les Albatros water sports centre for sailing, kayak and diving activities.

Good to know: Bréhat was France's first ever listed natural site… in 1907!

A former episcopal city, nestling beside an estuary

The characterful small town of Tréguier in Côtes-d'Armor, evangelised in the 6th century, is one of the seven stops on the Breton pilgrimage, the Tro Breiz.

This old episcopal city has a cathedral built in the 14th and 15th centuries: the Gothic St. Tugdual, named after the monk who converted the town to Christianity, is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Brittany. People come from far and wide to admire the bestiary in the stalls of the choir and the tomb of St. Ivo, patron saint of the region and a champion of the poor. Don't miss the 15th-century cloister, which is magnificent with its 48 arcades, and the 17th-century Augustinian convent.

The historic quarter extends to the harbour, with its half-timbered houses from the 15th and 16th centuries, narrow streets, hidden gardens and mansions: on Place du Martray, Rue Renan and Ruelle Saint-Yves, half-timbered façades abound, including the home of the philosopher Ernest Renan. One third of the municipality is a conservation area.

Located by an estuary washed by the tides, Tréguier has a commercial harbour which is mainly used for leisure.

Tourist site
An ancient medieval fortress and listed Historic Monument

Near the village of Plédéliac, at the heart of the forest in Côtes-d'Armor, the majestic La Hunaudaye Castle stands proud with its five imposing towers.

Typical of medieval architecture in Brittany, this 13th-century building belonged to the Tournemine family from the 13th to the 17th century.

Nearly in ruins when it was bought by the State in 1930, the castle has since been restored and is open to visitors. After walking up a small path, you will pass through the drawbridge, and can admire the five towers and their defensive systems from the outside, along with the curtain walls that connect them. There is a 3D film to help you understand this fortress' history. There are terminals and touchscreen tablets so you can step back in time and see how the place would have looked in different eras. Temporary exhibitions, shows and night-time trails keep visitors entertained.

For fans of mysteries and the uncanny, the castle is said to be haunted. Yet another reason to pay it a visit!

A strip of sand and pebbles extending into the sea for nearly 3 kilometres!

Located between two rivers whose opposing currents shaped it, the Trieux and the Jaudy, this strip of sand and pebbles extends into the sea for nearly 3 kilometres, starting from the municipality of Pleubian, Côtes-d'Armor. This coastal area has been protected since 2006, when the Furrow of Talbert Regional Nature Reserve was created. This is one of Europe's biggest coastal pebble strips.

Legend has it that this stony path was created by Merlin the Wizard to reach the fairy Viviane…

A paradise for shellfish-gatherers who go there to find Palourde clams, Venus clams, prawns, spider crabs and velvet crabs, the area is also visited by many bird species that come to mate during their migratory journey.

It is here that wrack, a mixture of seaweed, is gathered and then dried. Protected plant species can also be found here, like sea kale, sea holly and sea radish.

Although the area has suffered from being trampled by its many visitors, you can still take a walk in this unusual place by the sea, taking care not to tread on the seaweed. Dogs must be kept on a lead and are not allowed from April to August.

Forty or so kilometres of superb coastline, from Cape Fréhel to Cancale

Forty or so kilometres in length, the Emerald Coast (Côte d'Émeraude) runs along the north side of Brittany, between Cancale and Cape Fréhel. It is named after the sea's emerald colour.

This magnificent coastal part of Brittany can be enjoyed on foot, on horseback, by bike… it's a hikers' paradise! There are 350 kilometres of marked paths, including the GR34.

In summer, all manner of water sports and outdoor activities, and even spa therapy breaks, await holidaymakers at the seaside resorts, like Dinard, Saint-Malo, Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, Saint-Lunaire or Saint-Coulomb, and on the lovely, sandy beaches…

Visitors will find small fishing harbours, wildlife observation points, spectacular spring tides (especially in the Bay of Saint-Malo) and superbly colourful landscapes, not forgetting Breton gastronomy, which is always delicious.

One unmissable attraction on the Emerald Coast is Cape Fréhel, to the west, an impressive site and a listed ornithological reserve. Its cliffs stand 70 metres above the sea.

Not far from there, take the time to stop by Fort la Latte Castle, built in the 14th century on a rocky cape. It towers majestically over the English Channel.

Close by, the resort of Saint-Cast-le-Guildo is a charming place with its small harbour, coastal paths and seven sandy beaches!

Once a corsair town, the fortified town of Saint-Malo is built on a rock. With its magnificent ramparts, it offers stunning views of the sea and the Channel Islands of Jersey, Guernsey and Sark. While the walk around the ramparts is a must, the town of Robert Surcouf and Jacques Cartier has plenty to offer, too. It boasts picturesque cobbled streets, splendid ship-owners' houses and a castle, whose keep houses the History Museum of the Town and Pays Malouin. In Saint-Malo, you can watch the spring tides at first hand, or attend the start of the Route du Rhum race. At low tide, visit the National Fort built to plans by Vauban. Discover Chateaubriand's tomb on the islet of Le Grand Bé, or take a boat tour of the Bay of Saint-Malo…

Walkers and cyclists can follow the Rance Valley trail, which is marked with arrows. Windmills, ship-owners' country houses called malouinières, and fishing villages can all be seen along the way.

Another essential stop is the famous seaside resort of Dinard. It still has some magnificent villas reflecting its past as a Belle Époque holiday destination: the Moonlight Promenade and the Malouine Promenade will reveal some of them to you.

Between Dinard and Saint-Malo, the Rance tidal power plant, which EDF began operating in 1966, is open to the public: an interesting place to learn how the motion of the tides is used to generate electricity.

In medieval Dinan, a Town of Art and History, take the time to walk around the side streets, visit the feudal castle, and admire the half-timbered houses and beautiful religious buildings.

No tour of Cancale would be complete without a trip to the oyster beds or the Marine Farm, and a tasting of specialities from the sea, while enjoying a view of La Houle harbour for example. The Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions has an exhibition of objects, costumes and traditions that are part of local life in Cancale.

A lovely lake that is ideal for water sports, straddling Morbihan and Côtes-d'Armor

The biggest artificial lake in Brittany, Lake Guerlédan was built between 1923 and 1930, to supply power to the dam of the same name. It is open for leisure activities and bathing, with specially designed facilities at several beaches: the biggest of the beaches, Beau Rivage, where you can practise water skiing, canoeing, pedalo or paddle boarding, and where you can set off for a cruise on the lake; Sordan Cove; Guerlédan Cove, near the Cornec wood, where 12 marked circuits await mountain bikers; and Landroanec in Mûr-de-Bretagne, a popular place for fishing.

To the west of the lake, the environment becomes wilder with its moors and gorse, and there are some superb viewpoints like the site of Trégnanton.

Several marked hiking trails await ramblers, including a complete tour around the lake, as well as many exceptional places in the surrounding area: the Cistercian Abbey of Bon-Repos, from the 12th century, the old steel village of Les Forges des salles, the Nantes-Brest Canal, the covered alleys of Liscuis, the electricity museum in Saint-Aignan and more.

Tourist site
A charming little town on the banks of the River Léguer

The capital of Trégor, Lannion is the second biggest town in Côtes-d'Armor. Built on the hillside on the banks of the River Léguer, it comprises a lower part and an upper part of undeniable charm, with old half-timbered or slate-clad houses. The oldest ones, from the 16th century, are on Rue des Chapeliers. On Place du Marhallac'h, you can admire two houses with turrets.

For a direct view of the town, head to the Brélévenez steps: 140 steps lined by small houses, with an exceptional panorama when you reach the top. Time seems to have stood still in the district of Brélévenez, with its Templar church and typical houses.

Don't miss the Church of St. John du Baly, built in the 16th century and extended in the 17th century: its square tower once had a spire, which was demolished in 1760. Another sight to see: the old convent of St. Anne, now converted into a social and cultural centre.

There are some lovely woodland walks awaiting you along the Léguer: this is the realm of springs, secret chapels and sheltered little harbours, all the way to the beaches of Beg Léguer.

On Thursdays, the town is busy with its big, well-known market.
