Started in 1997, it is with great care that we have transformed what was originally 7ha of fields, while respecting the balance of nature that surrounds us. Instead of taming, nature has become an ally. They are, for example, species of covering roses, assemblages studied, which make it possible to limit the sessions of weeding, to proscribe the use of pesticides. This research and this work were rewarded by the label of "Remarkable Garden" awarded by the Ministry of Culture.

For 1 1/2 hours, the walker takes the alley of the lindens which connects the buildings to the small wood and its pond. It wanders in the French garden, its well-cut alleys, its charms in cone, a wrought iron square covered with bunches. Enjoy the subtle perfume of the rose garden in romantic fuzzy circles. Appreciate the nuances of the colors of this life-size painting with the incursion of a lavender blue in its park of boxwood in triangle, the hedges of hydrangeas. Surprises in front of the corner of the topiaries… Not counting the vegetable garden which blooms on 1600 m ², between vegetables, berries and aromatic plants. The seedlings are prepared in the greenhouse of the sumptuous orangery.

Heated from May 1 to September 30, the swimming pool of 12x6 m is located in the old court of the Castle. It is heated to ensure an ideal temperature of 26°C.

It is a freshwater pool, which is very nice. It is filtered with salt.

You can change in the poolhouse, equipped with a Jacuzzi, a shower, toilets and a fountain of fresh water.

Towels are provided.

Its medieval castle towers over a superb panorama!

This village is named after the Druyes springs, which abound in the municipality's territory. At the end of the 12th century, a castle fort built by the Counts of Nevers stood on a limestone promontory overlooking the valley.

From the imposing remains of Druyes-les-Belles-Fontaines Castle, which nowadays can be independently explored from Easter to the end of September on a discovery trail, you can enjoy a very beautiful view of the surrounding scenery. At the top of the 15th-century entrance postern, a superb view of La Puisaye and the edge of the Morvan awaits you! Formed of a residential palace backing onto a curtain wall, the castle was designed to a square plan: four round corner towers, a postern tower and two square side towers. The Romanesque gallery with arcatures and twin bays that can still be seen today is the only remaining part of the old seigniorial great hall.

Guided tours of the medieval fortress and village with typical houses are also available. During this commented walk, as well as seeing the castle, you can discover the Druyes springs, St. Roman's Cave, the 12th-century Romanesque church, the 19th-century washhouse or the old railway viaduct, where more daring visitors can go bungee jumping!

A historic destination amid the Auxerrois vineyards

Located between Paris and Dijon in Yonne, Auxerre has a prestigious cultural heritage, the legacy of its Gallo-Roman, medieval, gastronomic and winegrowing history!

Positioned at the intersection of land routes and waterways, the city developed on the banks of the River Yonne.

A City of Art and History, filled with many half-timbered houses that add to its charm, Auxerre is divided into distinct neighbourhoods, with so many different atmospheres to discover. Its historic centre is a 67-hectare preserved area.

In the La Marine district, organised around the Yonne, the memory of the river trades is very much alive. In particular, there is a beautiful 16th-century house, formerly owned by a merchant who traded via the river. This district lies at the foot of the oldest monument in Auxerre, the Benedictine Abbey of St. Germain, founded in the 5th century. Its 9th-century Carolingian crypt is adorned with the oldest known mural paintings in France! Meanwhile, the convent buildings house the Auxerre Museum of Art and History and its archaeological collections ranging from Prehistory to the Middle Ages. The 12th-century chapterhouse, the 14th-century cellar, the 17th-century cloister and the 12th-century St. John Tower with its beautiful stone spire are among the vestiges of the past that you can discover when visiting the area.

Near the La Marine district is the Gothic Cathedral of St. Stephen, built from the 13th to the 16th century. Its asymmetric façade and superb stained glass windows contribute to its elegance. In its 11th-century Romanesque crypt, you will be able to admire the famous and magnificent fresco of Christ on horseback.

Not far from there, the typical streets of the L'Horloge district will lead you to the Clock Tower, built in the 15th century on the remains of an old Gallo-Roman castrum. This is the neighbourhood of half-timbered and stone houses, mansions, Renaissance homes and Art Deco buildings. Near the tower is the house of the most famous court bailiff: Cadet Roussel!

Other sights to see are the Churches of St. Peter and St. Eusebius, and the lovely Leblanc-Duvernoy Museum of ceramics. The latter also has a fine collection of 18th-century tapestries from the Beauvais factory.

On Rue de Paris, the 18th-century Visitandines Chapel houses a large collection of polychrome woodcarvings by the artist François Brochet.

The Natural History Museum of Auxerre, meanwhile, has 140,000 natural history specimens that show the region's biodiversity in the past and present.

In an area with a strong winegrowing sector and significant gastronomic heritage, don't forget to sample a little glass of Auxerrois wine and one of the Burgundian specialities like gougère or eggs en meurette!

In the forest of La Puisaye, a castle fort under construction, using medieval techniques!
D955, Treigny
03 86 45 66 66

At the heart of La Puisaye, this construction site is exceptional and unusual, to say the least. It is in open from March to November in the municipality of Treigny, on the site of a former sandstone quarry. Since 1997, quarry workers, stonecutters, masons, lumberjacks, carpenters, blacksmiths, tilers, basket-weavers, carters and rope-makers have been involved in building a castle fort in Burgundy, using medieval techniques and local raw materials: sand, stone, clay, earth and wood from the Guédelon Forest. This Herculean construction project is due to be completed in 25 years' time!

As well as self-guided tours, where you can watch the labourers working in period costume, there are guided tours along with children's workshops. Please note, the Guédelon construction site is not open all year, so check the dates before planning your trip to this unusual and fascinating place!

In this village in Puisaye, pottery is a tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages...

Pottery in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye is a secular tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. Several sites, open to the public, display this ancestral skill:

The Stoneware Museum, based in a Renaissance castle which is a listed Historic Monument, tells the story of pottery in Puisaye, through superb collections of utilitarian and decorative stoneware pieces from the Carriès school;

The Potters Memorial House has displays of traditional Puisaye pottery, telling the story of the life and work of the potters of yesteryear, and offers throwing demonstrations;

The Jacques-Jeanneney Ceramics Centre, a place for ceramicists to meet and exchange information, hosts exhibitions and courses.

As well as these places of discovery, you'll find artistic craft workshops whose diverse creations will delight ceramics lovers!

The old stoneware market on Easter weekend, the pottery market on Ascension weekend, and the contemporary stoneware market in August are highlights in the annual calendar of Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye.

This old medieval town was once the capital of wood-floating

An old medieval town located at the confluence of the Yonne and the Beuvron, bordering the Nivernais Canal, the small town of Clamecy was once the capital of wood-floating to Paris. A rich heritage remains from its feudal past and the glorious age of wood-floating, which lasted for around four centuries - from 1549 to 1923.

Its old centre, a listed protected area, is an invitation to discovery, with its old timber-framed houses, such as the Weaver's House, and its Collegiate Church of Saint-Martin, a gem of Gothic art, topped with a majestic tower. After wandering the banks of the Beuvron and strolling along the picturesque streets of the historical quarter, head towards the River Yonne to admire the unusual Church of Notre-Dame-de-Bethléem, which carries the 20th century Heritage label. Not far from there, you can walk along the towpath of the Nivernais Canal.

As the birthplace of Romain Rolland, a famous writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915, it is only natural that Clamecy should be home to the Romain Rolland Museum of Art and History, which is based at the Bellegarde Mansion and includes a space dedicated to the man of letters who was born in Clamecy. It also features exhibits on wood-floating, which once made the town prosperous.

Its abbey church is the world's biggest Cistercian church!
5 Avenue de l'Abbaye, Pontigny
03 86 47 54 99

Built in the 12th century, Pontigny Abbey Church is the world's biggest Cistercian church! The dimensions of this huge medieval edifice are impressive: 108 metres long, with a 4,000 m² floor area! Its magnificent proportions, harmonious volumes, understated interior and the peace that it exudes all help to make this second daughter of Cîteaux such an unmissable heritage site.

A superb example of Cistercian architecture, the Burgundian abbey, nestling in an estate of 10 hectares planted with century-old trees, is typical of the transition between Romanesque and Gothic art. These two periods are clearly visible on the inside, which was designed to create a contemplative atmosphere for the monks.

In the 12th and 13th centuries, Pontigny welcomed two exiled archbishops of Canterbury: Thomas Becket and Stephen Langton. One of their successors, Edmund of Abingdon, canonised in 1246 and known in France as St. Edme, was laid to rest in the sanctuary.

Classical music-lovers should not miss Les Heures Musicales de Pontigny, part of the Festival of Sacred Arts which takes place there at the end of July.

A masterpiece of Burgundian Romanesque art
03 86 33 39 50

An important place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages and a stop along the Way of St. James, the famous Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene in Vézelay stands on the hill of this pretty village in Yonne, Burgundy.

Arriving in Vézelay is always a thrilling experience: in this timeless environment, steep side streets, Romanesque houses and mighty ramparts can all be seen on a stroll along the wall-walk.

A masterpiece of Burgundian Romanesque art and a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vézelay Basilica, a former abbey church originating in the 9th century, was saved from ruin in the 19th century by Viollet-le-Duc. The architectural ensemble that it presents to us today is most remarkable: a central portal with an exceptional tympanum; a bright nave of majestic proportions, decorated with a hundred superb carved capitals; and in response to the Romanesque elements, a transept and choir in the Gothic style. Under the choir lies a very old crypt dating back to the Carolingian era. The basilica can be independently explored with an audioguide, or seen on a guided tour.

Beforehand, the Interpretation Centre - Visitors' House, halfway up the hill to the basilica, has films and scale models so you can prepare for visiting Vézelay's famous monument.

Another sight to see is the museum about the work of Viollet-le-Duc on Place du Cloître, with its many sculptures from the basilica.

Before leaving the village, don't forget to visit the castle terrace behind the basilica. This pleasant, shaded esplanade offers a magnificent view of the Cure Valley and Morvan!

A superb medieval village in Burgundy, listed among the most beautiful in France!

Nestling in a bend in the River Serein, the medieval town of Noyers has kept many reminders of the Middle Ages: old side streets lined with typical houses, small town squares with picturesque names, three fortified doors and ramparts flanked by towers. One of the oldest houses in Noyers-sur-Serein is now the town hall: its foundations date back to the 12th century. The medieval city museum and the primary school are based in the former college founded in 1633.

Built in the 15th and 16th centuries in the Flamboyant Gothic style, the Church of Our Lady has some remarkable stalls from the 17th century.

Other sights to see are the washhouse from the early 19th century, the Golden Fleece house (Maison de la Toison d'Or) for its 16th-century façade, the Trade Guild house (Maison du Compagnonnage) adorned with carvings, or the Renaissance-style Kamato house.

A nice Museum of Naïve and Popular Arts has some fine collections, including books of illustrations by Hokusai, who invented "manga" in 1814.

Château de Bazoches, Bazoches
03 86 22 10 22

At the heart of the Morvan, on the slopes of a wooded hill facing the Vézelay hill, stands the imposing form of Bazoches Castle. Built in the 12th century by Lord Jean de Bazoches, this trapezoid-shaped feudal edifice made up of four round towers and a square keep surrounding an inner courtyard, was the home of the Marshall de Vauban in the 17th century. It was here that the illustrious engineer produced the studies and plans for over three-hundred structures and strongholds for the kingdom of France, under Louis XIV! Now the property of Vauban's descendants, the Bazoches estate is open to the public from the end of March to the start of November. Discover its rich furniture and large collection of memorabilia relating to the famous military architect. Vauban's bedroom and office, the bedroom of the Marshall's wife, the main gallery where engineers and designers used to work, drawing rooms and libraries: all are reminders of the past which you can admire during your visit.

Below the castle, the charming little village of Bazoches has a 12th and 16th-century church containing the tomb of the Marshall de Vauban. The Church of Saint-Hilaire offers good acoustics and in mid-July every year, the Musical Nights of Bazoches, a lyrical song festival, is held there.
