Important prehistoric site
Open map

Located on the municipality of Solutré-Pouilly, in the heart of the Mâconnais vineyard, the Roche de Solutré (Solutré Rock) is an important prehistoric site that has been awarded the "Great Site of France" label (meaning it meets the conflicting needs of local residents, the environment, and exceptionally large visitor numbers). Many horse bones, flints and coins have been discovered at the foot of this limestone escarpment that was a hunting site for over 25,000 years.

The Solutré prehistory museum dedicated to prehistory and Solutré art houses a collection of the objects found during archaeological digs on the site.

The summit of the Roche de Solutré, which can be reached via a pleasant footpath, offers walkers a superb panoramic view of the Pouilly-Fuissé vineyard, La Bresse, the Saône valley and the Jura.

Welcome to a land with many attractions!
Open map

In the north of the Rhône department, not far from Lyon, is a region known all over the world for its vineyards: Pays Beaujolais. This lush green territory, whose vineyards cover nearly 16,000 hectares, is made up of four zones: Vineyard Beaujolais (Beaujolais Vignoble), Countryside Beaujolais (Beaujolais Vert Nature), Golden Stone Beaujolais (Beaujolais des Pierres Dorées) and Town Centre Beaujolais (Beaujolais cœur de ville). Lovers of fine wines will be delighted to learn that introductory tasting sessions are available, with 10 wines such as Brouilly, Chénas and Saint Amour.

But Pays Beaujolais also has many charming places to visit, forming a wonderful heritage. Among them is Beaujeu, the historic capital of the Beaujolais region, with its picturesque half-timbered residence where the House of the Beaujolais Terroir is now based. There is also Villefranche-sur-Saône, the main town in Beaujolais, with its Rue Nationale lined with historic façades. Salles-Arbuissonnas-en-Beaujolais, which has preserved a superb Romanesque cloister from its past, is well worth a visit. Not forgetting the villages in the Land of Golden Stones, such as Bagnols, Oingt, Ternand and Jarnioux, where the lovely ochre and golden colours of the houses add considerable charm. Lovers of old buildings will enjoy visiting the castles and churches.

When it comes to countryside, Pays Beaujolais has countless marked paths in a landscape of valleys and hills, where meadows alternate with forests and vines. A treat for hikers! Essential rambles include one on Mount Brouilly, offering a splendid view over the vineyard of the same name and the Saône Valley. You can also hike up Mount Saint-Rigaud, the highest point in Beaujolais, for an equally spectacular 360° view.

In the Middle Ages, it used to be the most powerful Benedictine abbey of the West
Rue du 11 Août 1944, Cluny
Open map

Built in 910, the Cluny abbey used to be the most powerful Benedictine abbey of the West in the Middle Ages. Its abbey church, formerly 187 metres in length and 30 metres in height below the vault, was the largest church in Christendom until the construction of the St Peter's Basilica in Rome. Despite all the damage it suffered during the French Wars of Religion and at the beginning of the 19th century, the Cluny abbey has kept remains illustrating its prestigious religious past: Clocher de l'Eau-Bénite (Holy Water Belfry), and the Clock tower surmounting the south part of the big transept of the abbey church, the Jean de Bourbon chapel, the convent buildings, the cloister and the old flour store, which is now home to carved capitals from the vanished choir of the church. The Art and Archaeology museum, installed in the Jean de Bourbon abbatial palace, exhibits a remarkable collection of medieval sculptures coming from the abbey and the monastic village. Music lovers must not miss the classical music festival, Les Grandes Heures de Cluny, which takes place every year in July and August.

Lyon is famous for its historic centre, with treasures to amaze any visitor. This Gothic building is notable for its four towers, 13th-century stained glass windows, Flamboyant Gothic Chapel of the Bourbons, bishop's throne and 14th-century astronomical clock. Don't miss the famous traboules, the inner passageways between streets that run through one or more buildings, containing tucked-away galleries, inner courtyards, ancient façades... The must-see Rue Saint-Jean is the main street in Vieux-Lyon, with a string of beautiful residences like the La Chamarerie mansion, the House of Lawyers or the Laurencin mansion.

Lyon also has a significant Roman heritage, exemplified by the remains of the Roman theatres. Located on the Fourvière hill, within the archaeological park which hosts the famous music festival Les Nuits de Fourvière every summer, they consist of a large theatre, the oldest Roman theatre in France, and the small theatre, the Odeon. Nearby, the Lugdunum Gallo-Roman Museum exhibits remarkable collections of sculptures, mosaics, jewellery and ceramics, as well as the famous Claudian Table, a bronze plaque inscribed with a speech given by the Roman Emperor Claudius in the year 48. At the top of the lush green hill is the majestic Basilica of Our Lady of Fourvière, which overlooks the city. Built at the end of the 19th century, it has a richly decorated interior, as evidenced by the mosaics depicting the story of the Virgin. From the esplanade, you can enjoy a marvellous view over the city, and also over the Alps on a clear day. Continue to the Heights Park (Parc des Hauteurs), which offers many viewpoints over the Saône and the city.

Another of Lyon's hills, La Croix-Rousse, offers a village atmosphere at the top (le plateau) and picturesque slopes (les pentes). It was once the neighbourhood of the canuts, the specialist silk workers who made Lyon famous in the past. An ideal place for a stroll, La Croix-Rousse is full of sights to see, with its House of the Canuts, dedicated to the history of silk-making in Lyon, typical traboules, pretty shops, frescoes and trompe-l'oeil paintings like the impressive Wall of the Canuts. Between the Rhône and the Saône, the Presqu'île invites walkers and shopaholics to discover its commercial streets lined with boutiques and its beautiful squares, including Place des Terreaux, Place Bellecour - the biggest in Lyon! - Place des Jacobins and Place Louis Pradel. Rue Mercière is an ideal place to indulge in Lyon's culinary specialities thanks to its many restaurants. In the midst of an urban renewal programme, the Confluence quarter dazzles visitors with its ultra-modern creations. The museum is a must-see, for its unusual architecture as well as its collections about the history of Earth and human evolution.

To unwind, nothing beats a walk in the Tête d'Or Park. The banks of the Saône and Rhône rivers are also ideal for pleasant strolls, as is Barbe Island in the middle of the Saône, where the remains of a Romanesque abbey will delight lovers of old buildings.

Lyon is also a major gastronomy destination. The authentic specialities served by the "bouchons" (small restaurants typical of Lyon), lovely brasseries and great Michelin-starred restaurants are proof of this. Located at 102 Cours Lafayette, in Lyon's 3rd district, the Halles de Lyon - Paul Bocuse is a covered food market with shops and restaurants offering excellent local products. This is the place to be for gourmets and anyone who loves good food.

Villefranche raises the veil on its architectural heritage and proposes an urban route around the important places of the city. The Renaissance courtyards, the facades of mansions constitute a listed Renaissance ensemble.

The 24-step course invites you to discover freely the mansions dating from the 15th to the 18th century concealed on both sides of the Rue Nationale.

Step by step, starting from the Tourist Office with the totems installed along the rue Nationale, you will know the history and architecture of the Renaissance courtyards, the facades of mansions constituting a Renaissance listed building.

You can sometimes push the doors of the houses to appreciate the interior refinement. You will also be able to listen to audio comments via your Smartphone by flashing the QR code displayed on the totems.

And to not miss anything, go to the OT to bring you the map of the circuit and buy if you want the full booklet of the visit (€ 6.90), a souvenir of your visit to the capital of Beaujolais

Then, you will only have to follow the limits which will reveal to you singular anecdotes on the buildings …

Meet your guide near the Palais de Justice in the center of Lyon, where you'll be set up with an electric bike. It makes for an easy way to sightsee, giving you the option of pedaling or letting the bike do some of the work. Lyon is chock full of historical monuments and buildings, and it's also the culinary capital of the country – which is saying something in a place like France. Biking through this charming city is a great way to see the sights and work up an appetite. The exact route for this Lyon electric bike tour varies depending on the day, but with an expert guide to lead the way you won't miss out on the best of this UNESCO World Heritage city. Pedal through the tunnel of Croix Rousse, a delight inside with colorful lights and music playing, on your way to the Lyon Cathedral. Hear stories of the city's history as you ride, seeing both Lyon's best-known sights as well as some hidden gems your guide points out. Keep riding along the  Rhône River, with its riverside path recently renovated to be more suitable for cycling, to the Place Bellecour. The square is looked over by a statue of King Louis XIV. From there, ride past the lake in Tête d'Or park, a popular spot for boating. Take a break midway through your bike tour to refresh and reinvigorate with some of those famous local foods. Taste some locally-made cheese like Saint-Félicien, cured meats and a local pork sausage called rosette, sweet cakes and other morsels to share among your fellow cyclists. Wash it all down with a glass of local wine. After the meal break of 30-45 minutes (depending on the tour), continue your tour through Lyon's Old Town, where you'll understand why it's a UNESCO-listed city. Admire historic buildings such as the City Hall, Palais Saint-Pierre, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon and the stately Place des Terreaux. Upgrade to a 4-hour tour in order to continue your ride up to La Croix-Rousse for spectacular views overlooking the whole of Lyon. This extended tour also includes a stop at the 19th-century  Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, with yet more wonderful city views from its hilltop perch. At the conclusion of your tour, your guide will lead you back to the starting point.
