The origin of shortbread dates back to the beginning of the 18th century in Normandy and is defined as "a sort of pastry that is quite popular and that crumbles like sand when eaten". Around 1870, Littre included the word "sandblasted" in his dictionary, where he defined it as "the name of a kind of cake in Normandy".

More than a century ago, in the small Norman village of Lonlay l'Abbaye, Virgile Fouilleul, the baker, between two batches of bread, used to cook softly with shortbread in molds made by the carpenter. Of the village. They are sold on the spot or sent to soldiers on the front.

At his death, his son-in-law Georges Lautour, takes the case. Mobilized during the second world war, on his return, he also decided to embark on the manufacture of a shortbread Norman to compensate for the loss of customers relative to his prolonged absence… His wife, Helene, provides him the recipe for his notebooks…

  • A history beginning in the twelfth century

The foundations of the castle go back to the 11th century. Originally, it had to be made of wood and stones. Around 1530 the Baron de Flers, Nicolas iii de Grosparmy, had a castle in the style of François 1er very luxuriant on the site of the old manor. He entrusted it to the architect Blaise le Prestre. He is the builder of the Hotel d'Escoville in Caen, the home of his friend Nicolas de Valois. The legend says they had made alchemical discoveries. But it is their economic activities, particularly mining, that enrich them.

  • French renaissance architecture

At this time, the castle of Flers consists of a wing on the moat and a small wing in return of square. There are round turrets such as Pontécoulant and Couterne. The roofs are bell-shaped. Renaissance French architecture is characterized by high-roofed buildings and its many decorative elements.

In the 18th and 17th centuries, important works of embellishment were undertaken by the families of Pellevéet de la Motte-Ango. In 1764, Ange Hyacinthe de la Motte-Ango built a classic prescription facade on the south.

Distillerie La Monnerie: Production of calvados, cider and pommeau in Basse-Normandie

Specialized in the production of calvados, cider and pommeau, the Distillery La Monnerie welcomes you in Normandy Switzerland in the Orne, in Cerisy -Belle-Etoile at the foot of the Mont de Cerisy (10mn from Flers).

The story of the Legay family, nestled in the heart of the Ornais bocage in Basse-Normandie, is actually a family of distillers since 1920.

Indeed, our grandfather, First name Constant, is at the origin of our becoming. This man, born in 1891, has a strong personality and has always been very fond of life. His curious mind ahead of the time allowed him to acquire land, plant many apple trees and be able to raise his own orchards and also develop a dairy business.

Our father Rémy succeeded him in 1960 accompanied by his wife Suzanne who assured with great discretion the transition with his son.

Since 1988, Didier Legay, his grandson, supported by his wife Isabelle, exploits the lands located in Cerisy-Belle-Etoile and continues the tradition of making Calvados with the same alembic, Of a century.

Come and discover the slow transformation of the apple in Calvados with our productions of very old Calvados, Cidre, and Pommeau de Normandie by visiting our family distillery! We offer gourmet boxes and baskets of local products. Our specialty is the realization of custom labels.

We invite you to the world of our distillery where tradition and quality remain the concerns of our family for three generations now.

At the moment you enter our cellars, the smell asks you: should we keep silent and enjoy, or speak and share?

The castle its majestic flowers

You will inevitably be attracted by the remains of the castle. It was erected in 1870 at the top of Mount. John Burkingyoung, a London lawyer, is at the origin of the building. The castle was finally ceded fifteen years later (1885) to the Corbières family. The new owner brought 4,000 feet of rhododendrons from the Jersey Islands. Saint-Clair-de-Halouze headframe: a journey to the heart of our mining industry

This is one of the most beautiful testimonies of the mining past of the region. The Saint-Clair-de-Halouze iron mine was mined from 1905 to 1978. The ore extracted from the basement was taken up by well 1bis. Above this well, you can still see the metallic headstock. The last one in Basse-Normandie.

  • The ore extracted was then roasted in calcination furnaces to enrich its iron content. Finally, it was shipped by train to the blast furnaces of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, where it was converted into cast iron and steel.
  • Unique in Basse-Normandie

This well 1bis sank up to 375 m underground. The sinking of the well begins in 1931, but the war of 1939-1945 stops the works. They will therefore only be completed in 1949. It is at this date that the heading above the well is installed. Taken as war damage to Germany, the Saint-Clair-de-Halouze headframe allowed the commissioning of the new well.

  • The headframe is the last one still erected above a mine shaft in Basse-Normandie. It is therefore one of the last major witnesses of the mining and steel history of the region.
  • A preserved heritage

The association Le Savoir & Le Fer and the City of Flers, owner of the site, are joining forces today to safeguard and enhance this heritage. A veritable monument to the industrial history of the Bocage Ornais, conservation and restoration work will be undertaken as well as for the calcining ovens at La Butte Rouge.

In 1873, the abbot Victor Paysant (1841-1921) was named parish priest of Menil-Gondouin, while the church of Saint-Vigor was not yet completed. Until 1921, the abbot decorated and furnished the church which was nicknamed "Living and Speaking Church of Menil-Gondouin". He was a man of faith, a friend of the poor, an indefatigable pilgrim, a conservative of heritage and very respectful of the past. His many trips inspired him to decorate his church which became a Christian museum. He was inspired by churches and cathedrals covered with frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ. This priest wanted to explain the Catholic religion through the image, he wanted to transform his church into a living catechism. After his death, the new abbot, at the order of the ecclesiastical authorities, had the paintings effaced and buried many statues.

At the beginning of 2004, the mayor of the commune at the time, Guy Béchet, began a journey on foot to Rome to raise funds for the restoration of the church's decorations. With the help of the association "Les Amis du Houlme", work on the exterior façade was completed in September 2004. In 2006, restoration work was resumed. This work concerns the interior of the church, as well as the floor tiles. With the help and the memory of a century-old inhabitant of the commune but also with the help of old postcards, the church finds, except the statuary, its state before 1921. On October 7, 2006, the bishop Of Sées came to concelebrate a mass in the church thus restored.

Fortified medieval town

Perched on a hill above Varenne valley is the fortified medieval town of Domfront, founded in the 11th century. It has preserved many reminders of its rich past, making it a delightful place for a stroll: charming squares and narrow streets, a 12th-century Romanesque keep, remains of the old feudal castle, rampart towers, and picturesque half-timbered houses, mansions and interior courtyards. There is also a stunning view across the surrounding hedged farmland from Place du Panorama and the castle garden.

At the foot of the town, on the banks of the Varenne, stands the 11th- and 12th-century Notre-Dame-sur-l'Eau church, a superb example of Norman Romanesque art.

The hedged farmland around Domfront has been awarded the Site Remarquable du Goût (site of culinary excellence) label and is a must-visit area for its two specialities, perry and calvados – alcoholic drinks made using locally-grown pears and apples.

From April 1st to June 30th and from September 1st to October 16th

From July 1st to August 31st: Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays show at 3.30 pm

La Michaudière, typical farmhouse of Normandy with its beautiful orchard of century-old pear trees, was purchased in 1984 by Jean Dinard. The buildings had been totally abandoned for more than 40 years. Each building has been restored with traditional materials (stone, wood, mud...).

In order to preserve the local cultural and architectural heritage, half-timbered barns threatened with demolition were dismantled and reassembled at La Michaudière.

From 1989, Jean Dinard chose to open La Michaudière to the public. An equestrian show is created (which will become De la Terre à la Scène), an open restaurant (Les Tables), and various exhibitions are soon available to visitors.

Since 2009, strong of our success and always to share our passions, we propose you a trip in the imagination of different sculptors. About twenty works are exhibited and will not fail, at the bend of an alley, to surprise you.

Thus, over the years, La Michaudière, this farm typical of Normandy, has become one of the must-see places in Normandy.

For a lunch, a show or a visit, come and enjoy the charms of this unique place.
