Floral town overlooking the Mayenne

Listed amongst the most beautiful detours in France, the thousand-year-old town of Château-Gontier, on the banks of the River Mayenne, combines built heritage and attractive landscapes.

Its historic centre in the upper town, with narrow streets dotted with private mansions, gives you a glimpse of its rich past as a linen cloth trading town. Built in the 11th century, the Romanesque church of St John the Baptist is the oldest church in Château-Gontier, and boasts a remarkable crypt. Not far from there, at the intersection between La Grande Rue and Rue Jean Bourré, stands the Hôtel Fouquet. It was built in the 17th century and is now home to the museum of Art and Archaeology.

On the left bank of the Mayenne, in the Faubourg quarter, stands the old Ursulines convent, an architectural gem founded in the 17th century which is now used as a cultural centre. On a tour of the convent, you can admire the Jesuit-style Church of the Trinity, the cloister and convent buildings, and the elegant 15th-century lords' manor house of La Touche.

Enjoy a relaxing stroll in one or more of the many floral areas in Château-Gontier. Don't miss the Garden of the Edge of the World, near the Church of St John the Baptist, with its diverse species, 17th-century icehouse and beautiful view of the Mayenne Valley, and the Scent Garden near the river, full of aromatic plants and fragrant flowers.

A haven of peace for around 1500 local and exotic animals...
13 quater Rue Félix Marchand, Saint-Fort
02 43 07 24 38

The Refuge Animalier de l'Arche, a real haven of peace for around 1500 local and exotic animals, lies in a lush green environment covering 15 hectares in thes commune of Saint-Fort, near Château-Gontier. It takes care of injured, sick, mistreated and abandoned mammals, birds and reptiles, which find peace and balance here after a difficult start in life. Once they have been treated and cured, the animals are released into their natural environment: only the ones that are most dependent on humans are kept. A great adventure worthy of Noah's ark, whose story began in 1974, when a bunch of friends picked up an animal they had found by the roadside...

Open to the public all year round, the Refuge de l'Arche provides viewing and observation terraces for its visitors, so they can admire the animals in a peaceful environment, as well as signs and educational materials. The 150 species on display include lions, bears, tigers, leopards, wolves, monkeys, owls, herons and swans. There are three discovery trails: long circuit - short circuit - countryside circuit!

This peaceful path is dotted with beautiful surprises...

Having originated at the foot of Mount Avaloirs in the department of Orne, the River Mayenne, which is nearly 200 km long, courses through the department of Mayenne, over peaceful, verdant landscapes, as well as beautiful towns such as Mayenne, Laval and Château-Gontier, which have a rich heritage. This pretty river has a number of locks and lends itself particularly to river tourism: cruising on a sightseeing boat, a trip in a canoe-kayak or on a raft, a canal boat trip, a fishing trip – these are all good ways to discover the charms of the Mayenne valley... As well as the various activities on the water, you can cycle or walk along the 85 km pathway, taking the towpath between Mayenne and Daon. Interesting information boards are dotted along the way, with facts about the local flora, fauna and built heritage.

The last ferry over the Mayenne is found at Ménil, used by local people and tourists alike to cross the river to the other bank, in the direction of Coudray.

An 18th-century gem and listed Historic Monument
Avenue de Champagne, Craon
02 43 06 11 02

The remarkably well-preserved Craon Castle, on Guinefol hill, was built in the 18th century by the Marquis d'Armaillé. Owned by the Count and Countess de Guébriant, this historic monument made of white Loire stone has retained its period features inside: a Louis XVI décor, with beautiful wood panelling, reflecting the atmosphere of the Old Regime... The grand hall and its main staircase, dining room, Oval room and music room can all be admired on a guided tour, available in the months of July and August.

Around the castle, a huge 47-hectare park, which has been awarded the Remarkable Garden label, contains a French-style garden, a 42-hectare English-style park with ancient trees, and a family kitchen garden full of flowers, vegetables and old fruit trees. Stroll through the park and you can also admire a chapel, washhouse and laundry, and a 19th-century icehouse...

The old centre of Craon, standing on the banks of the Oudon, is worth a trip for its timber-framed houses, market hall built in 1850, and its Pré de la Liberté washhouse, which as it turns out is the biggest in Mayenne!

Its Old Castle, medieval streets, Perrine Garden...

Standing on the banks of the River Mayenne, at the heart of the old province of Maine, the town of Art and History of Laval, founded in the 11th century, has kept some remarkable heritage features from its rich past.

The Old Castle is the town's flagship monument and was the residence of the Counts of Laval until 1794. It was built in the 11th-16th centuries and is flanked by an imposing circular keep. Nowadays it is home to a museum of Naive Art, whose exhibits include work by the Laval painter Henri Rousseau aka Le Douanier ("the customs officer"), making for one of the finest collections of Naive Art in Europe!

After admiring the treasures of the Old Castle, lovers of old buildings will find plenty to enjoy on a stroll along the medieval streets of Laval! An ideal opportunity to contemplate reminders from another time, such as the picturesque half-timbered façades with corbels, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, and the Beucheresse gate, a remainder of the medieval wall. One of its machicolated towers was the birthplace of the painter Henri Rousseau.

Not far from the Beucheresse gate, continue your walk along the pretty Anne d'Alègre walkway, at the foot of the ramparts, which will lead you to the splendid Perrine Garden. Overlooking the Mayenne Valley from the top of its rocky spur, this public park is very popular with the people of Laval, with a magnificent rose garden, English-style park and children's play area. A variety of beautiful species, such as cedar, lime trees, giant sequoia, gingko biloba and magnolias, make for a lovely scene...

For a different type of attraction, head to the Lactopôle André Besnier, to find out all about milk and dairy products. With over 4000 objects and documents, it's the biggest milk and cheese museum in the world! Covering over 5000 m², this place is also dedicated to the history of the Lactalis Group, which turned dairy farming from a craft to a hi-tech industry in the 20th century.

In the summer, there is a range of activities on offer to discover or rediscover Laval's many attractions: a sightseeing tour of the town on a pleasure boat, or on the little train; a dramatised, torch-lit tour; a trip in a raft, pedalo or canoe departing from the river stopping place...

4 Boulevard Arago, Angers
02 41 24 18 48

Here is a place not to be missed when visiting Angers: the Museum of Jean-Lurçat and Contemporary Tapestry, located on a medieval historic site, the former St. John's Hospital, a remarkable example of 12th-century architecture where you can see an impressive hall for the sick, a cloister and even an apothecary from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Great Hall for the Sick, a very fine example of the Angers Gothic style, is where the famous tapestry The Song of the World (Le Chant du Monde), the masterpiece of the famous painter, ceramicist and tapestry creator Jean Lurçat, has hung since 1968. A modern tribute to the famous medieval Apocalypse Tapestry, The Song of the World was woven in Aubusson between 1957 and 1966, and comprises ten tapestry panels with a total area of 500 m²! This monumental and spectacular work, which was interrupted by the death of Jean Lurçat, is the biggest contemporary group of tapestries. Evoking the future of humanity, this veritable textile symphony offers a symbolic and humanistic vision of the 20th century.

In the old orphanage building dating from the 17th century, there are sixty or so works displayed in chronological order, forming the core of the permanent collections. Thanks to donations by Lurçat, Gleb and Grau-Garriga, they tell the story of textile art from the 1950s to the present day all by themselves.
