Becoming eco-citizens - "easy everyday gestures"

I economise water

Doing the dishes by hand should not be synonymous with waste: go to the least dirty dirtiest, save water (turn off the tap while washing) and just use the right amount of cleaning, that is the good method.

I control the flow faucets

A double action save hot water is saving both water and energy needed to heat.

The correct position preferably leave the mixing valves in position "cold" to avoid asking for hot water or warm then one needs most of the time, cold water.

I close the tap faucet flowing without reason should trigger an immediate closure reflex. The amount of water saved in this case is huge. With this in mind, when we brush our teeth, it is best to rinse with a toothbrush glass. Similarly, it is easy to fill a little sink to clean his razor.

Brushing teeth = 12 liters / minute if you let the water run, 1 shaving "over water" = 18 liters

I optimizes cooking

The electric hotplates continue to heat for 15 minutes after extinction: this heat, completely free, deserves to be used during long cooking. Hold 1.5 liters of boiling water in a pan request 4 times less energy with a lid.

Priority to fresh

Fresh foods require less energy than canned or frozen products. Local products have generally not used to transport, heated greenhouses, refrigeration or chemical preservatives.

Addition heavy the food system represents almost a third of French emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG). A fruit imported out of season, consumed for transportation 10 to 20 times more oil than the same fruit produced locally and purchased in season.

I warmed in the microwave

Use sparingly food can thaw in the refrigerator without using the microwave: it's slower but it does not consume any energy. The microwave is ideal for heating food and consumes less than a traditional oven.

I cook in the oven

Hunting the drafty open the door of an oven during operation wastes a lot of heat: to assess cooking your preparation, it is better to use lighting control.

I do not throw anything in the toilet

Tampons, diapers, medicine, batteries, paints, solvents, detergents… the toilet is not a trash can. All of these affect the proper operation of treatment plants. Improperly disposed of, they find themselves in a natural environment and degrade the environment.

I sort my waste

Although well to sort recycling waste separation is an indispensable voluntary action for the environment. Each of us must follow sorting instructions not to disturb recycling.

Blue bins for non-recyclable waste

Yellow bins for cardboard, paper and plastic bottles.

Glass bottles must be stored in lockers located next to the containers.

I turn the light off

Acquire a good reflex why let turn an empty room? Remember that 3 bulbs of 75W which remain on an evening consume as much as a washing at 60 ° C.

Electrical devices are often connected 24 hours on 24. The vigils are consuming 150 to 500 kWh per household per year, the consumption of a refrigerator over the same period!

I drink tap water

Changing ideas received tap water is perfectly drinkable, unless otherwise specified by the Departmental Directorate of Health and Social Action. In France, bottled water consumption has been multiplied by 2 in 20 years, which represents thousands of kilometers, tons of fuel consumption and C02 emitted before reaching our table. Not to mention the billion plastic bottles that result. Only 4 of 10 bottles are recycled: think of the sort!

improve the taste to remove the chlorine taste, it is necessary to add the water in a decanter, chlorine evaporating on contact with air. In France, only 1% of tap water for drinking while about 140 liters of bottled water are consumed per year per capita. The mineral water costs at least 50 times more expensive than tap water

I respect nature

Making small animals seeking tranquility for their vital activities. The watch is an exciting and without adverse consequences for the species, provided that one is discreet.

Do not pick plants because they are rare and protected. Every plant, every animal, even the most banal, have a role to play in nature.

A space preserve nature is fragile, the minimum is strictly follow the regulations in place. The marked trails, suitable for walking and biking, to be borrowed.

Places privileged nature reserves or national parks that welcome walkers under certain conditions, rely on their discipline.

Nature is a space to share with its people, with respect for each

Straddling Deux-Sèvres, Charente-Maritime and Vendée, the Poitevin Marsh, which covers 111,200 hectares, is France's second largest wetland area after the Camargue. The area is full of diverse natural habitats and exceptional biodiversity, and is a stopping place for many migrant birds…

The landscape mosaic of the Poitevin Marsh Regional Natural Park is unique, with the coastal area alternating between sandy beaches, dunes and forests, but also cliffs and mudflats on the Bay of Aiguillon side; the wet marsh and its famous Green Venice, a listed Great Site of France, where countless conches (narrow canals) and wider tree-lined canals can be seen; the dried marsh, with vast expanses of crops and meadows; and the edges of the marsh, with plains covered in cultivated fields.

A favourite destination for nature-lovers, the Poitevin Marsh is home to incredible wildlife ranging from the European otter to the European tree frog through the purple heron and the greater horseshoe bat. No fewer than 250 species of birds, 38 species of fish, 60 species of dragonflies and 80 species of butterflies are listed there!

To discover the charms of the wet marsh, a destination in the Poitevin Marsh that's highly prized by lovers of romantic getaways, nothing beats a boat trip in the heart of the mysterious Green Venice, on peaceful canals interwoven with greenery: you are guaranteed a change of scene, where trees and other plants form a kind of vault between water and sky! Many visitors to the Park choose to explore it on foot or by bicycle, to take the time to savour the beauty of the wild, unspoilt countryside at their own pace.

The Poitevin Marsh Park also boasts a rich water industry heritage, and invites you to discover its harbours, locks, hydraulic works, footbridges, fountains and washhouses. For more urban sightseeing, you have the choice between its charming, characterful little towns, such as Arçais, Coulon or Nieul-sur-l'Autise, and gateway cities like Fontenay-le-Comte, Niort, Luçon and Marans. Religious architecture enthusiasts, meanwhile, won't want to miss a chance to visit Maillezais Abbey and see its remarkable relics, a listed Historic Monument.

During your stay in the Poitevin Marsh, you should also make the most of the local gastronomy. Authentic and flavoursome, it gives pride of place to the products of fishing and shellfish farming, not to mention specialities such as farci poitevin, a delicious terrine of green vegetables, frogs' legs, snails, coypu and ham with mogette beans!

Oyster beds renowned for the quality of their oysters

The oyster beds of Marennes-Oléron, including the mouth of the Seudre estuary, the East coast of Oléron island, and the coast situated north of Marennes, are recognised for the quality of their oysters. The oysters are bred in beds 5 km out at sea, then matured in shallow ponds called claires. These salt-water marshes and the very picturesque oyster ports are interesting places to visit. The Cayenne port in Marennes is very typical with its brightly-coloured oystermen's huts.

The Oyster City (Cité de l'Huître) at Marennes, along the Cayenne Canal, has a museum area devoted to oyster-farming, split up into five themed sheds, as well as an educational oyster farm, where a guided tour can help visitors learn more about the work of an oyster farmer. You can also explore, on foot or by bicycle, the Claires Path (Chemin des Claires). This interpretation trail, which has illustrated information boards at intervals along the way, will round your visit off pleasantly.

The St. Nicholas Tower

Legend has it that the St. Nicholas tower was built by the fairy Melusine. As she flew above La Rochelle with the stones of a destroyed castle, her apron tore. The stones falling on top of each other would have formed the tower Saint-Nicolas...

This tower whose date of construction is not attested by any historical document, constitutes with the tower of the Chain, a gate of the Old Port of La Rochelle. For centuries, it has served as the defensive lock of the city's waterfront. A veritable "urban dungeon" and palatial dwelling facing the ocean, this military building symbolizes the power and wealth of La Rochelle.

The tower completed in 1376 and 38 meters high, is built on long stakes of oak sunk in the mud and set by stones. But during its construction the tower sinks into the unstable ground and leans towards the Northeast. It is then reinforced and from the 2nd floor, it regains its equilibrium. We still see today this slight imbalance.

The Tower of the Chain

After the completion of the tower Saint-Nicolas, the municipality has built the tower of the Chain from 1382 to 1390. Its name comes from the big iron chain that had to maneuver with a winch to allow entry and exit ships in the Old Port. The Captain of the Tower thus monitored the movements of the boats and collected the duties and taxes of passage.

In 1472, the tower receives the visit of King Louis XI. A legend says that he engraved an inscription on a window of the tower with the diamond he wore on his finger...

While serving as a powder keg during the Fronde (uprising against the monarchy in the minority of Louis XIV), the Tower explodes and remains 300 years open. Major restoration work is taking place in the 20th and 21st centuries with the reconstruction of a battlemented way, the creation of a new roof and then the restoration of 2 floors inside.

The Lantern Tower

The origins of the Lantern tower date back to the end of the 12th century. Located at the corner of the wall of the Saint-Jean-du-Pérot district, the last medieval lighthouse on the Atlantic coast, it served throughout its history of lighthouse and prison.

First residence of the "Disarmer of the nave" to disarm the ships before they enter the port, it is then equipped with a monumental arrow and a lantern to guide the sailors. 55 meters high, it is visible from all the Pertuis d'Antioche (strait between the islands of Ré, Aix and Oléron) and participates in the "Watch for the sea" for the military surveillance of the coast.

From the 16th century the tower serves as a prison. It contains prisoners of war captured at sea, sailors, mainly English, Dutch and Spanish. Protestants at the time of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes are also locked up as well as insurgents vendéens. In 1822, the "Four Sergeants" leading a plot to overthrow King Louis xviii are arrested in La Rochelle, two of them are imprisoned in the tower before being guillotined in Paris... a story that will earn him among others the nickname "Tower of 4 Sergeants".

An authentic winter garden, with an elegant metallic structure, close to the port: that is charming... The chef cultivates very natural pleasures: local and organic products, wines of small independent winemakers (without omitting the grands crus) … But good !

Heading on the spice route, from East to West, from North to South, during our travels, we brought back untapped flavors: Tonca beans, Sarawak pepper, Raz-el-Hanout... which contribute to revisit our traditional cuisine.

Like spices, this warm and atypical place will give you a breath of exoticism...

Rich in their diversity, the setting and the atmosphere are like havens of change of scenery.

Grégory revolutionizes his menu by offering a tasty, simpler cuisine in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere at L'Entracte restaurant in La Rochelle.

The chef, Alexandre Pouzineau, wanted you to enjoy a quality cuisine with ease by selecting the best producers in the region with homemade confit foie gras from Morille, fruit bread toast / veal head, sauce / pork belly confit, roasted vegetables of Mr Gousseau / cassoulet rochelais with hake and prawns, cocos from Vendée...

It is at the foot of the Tower of the Chain that is this old estaminet of the eighteenth century. Protected by the towers and facing the permanent spectacle of the Old Port, the restaurant Les Flots is a must in La Rochelle, rich of a history that began in 1945.

Even if this establishment has always been part of the landscape rochelais bar bistrot that it was, it remains only a vague memory... December 17, 1997, Grégory Coutanceau takes the direction of the place, this is his first case, he is only 22 years old and dreams full of the head, it is the beginning of the great history of the Flots.

You will enjoy a sea cuisine made with high quality products, and cooked with finesse and originality. All this harmoniously put on stage by a young and dynamic team.

The Garden Market has a makeover and the result is simply beautiful. Light is everywhere, in the first room overlooking the famous paved street but also and especially under the glass roof. Even a day without sun, the pleasure of lunch is real. The other asset is undeniably its patio, colorful, which can forget the hubbub of the city sipping a coffee or a smoothie watching the bamboo. In the garden, we sit around coffee tables to eat dishes in the image of the place: ravishing. It's up to you to choose from a short card, the stars here are the sandwiches which consist of fresh products and especially of the season: Cordouan (country goat cheese, grilled bacon, dried fruits), Boyard (andouillette, apple and cream of mustard à la old) or Saint-Nicolas (brandade of cod, rockets, hazelnuts); all are accompanied by potatoes and green salad. In the summer, a single desire to have fun around salads (Oléron, Ré and Aix) or a piece of salty pie such as Hermione (candied onions, potatoes, grilled bacon, Saint-Nectaire). Have a look for desserts, they are happy gourmet: rice pudding, caramel, brownie or coffee greedy. An address to remember for lunch but also taste!

And if today we had fun around some Italian specialties? If you feel like it, head for rue Saint-Nicolas. We appreciate the setting, a quiet alley and of course the terrace, ideal for sunny days. We would like to advise you to book but it is not possible. One instruction; come early if you want a place. What a pleasure to be in a room decorated with red benches, wooden tables and inevitable products from Italy. We particularly like the machine that slices the thin slices of ham that are placed on the pizzas. The Petit Futé advises you more than strongly to choose one. Each is both fine and crisp and prepared with organic wheat flour. All are really good like the Speck (gorgonzola, mozzarella, speck) or the Courgette Coppa. IGP Gragnano pasta also deserves to be tasted because it is carefully prepared. In addition to the essential spaghetti bolognese, there are stuffed pasta, hand made and tagliatelle with two cheeses made from organic farm eggs. Among friends, you will surely want to enjoy plates of cold cuts with ham of Parma, mortadella, coppa... If the dishes are hearty, do not leave without devouring a dessert. Note to gourmands, the profiteroles are gigantic but we can also have fun around a frosted lemon, a pear Belle-Hélène or vacherin.

Restaurant
Rue du Port - Lauzières
05 46 37 45 44

Port Lauzières is a haven of peace, resolutely authentic. The setting is idyllic, the charming place.

A stone's throw from La Rochelle, the small port of Plomb, devoted to oyster farming, sets the scene. Opposite the Breton port, are spread out along the sea of tiny huts of colorful fishermen with a breathtaking view of the island of Ré, nearby.

This is where Marc Antony and Julie Morillon, jazz musicians set their bags. And if the place knew then a change of ownership, nothing has moved, or almost, since years.

Generous, greedy, and unpretentious, this is what could sum up this atypical place, anchored in the local landscape. A little guinguette at the edge of the cliff. A little bit of the world. The place has remained in its juice, a large fireplace for winter evenings, the beautiful terrace open on the ocean sheltered from the wind. We come here to enjoy the charm of the authentic, the warm welcome of the owners, the smiles of the waitresses, and the cuisine... delicious.

Market
14 Boulevard Maréchal Lyautey - La Rochelle

Another great market of exception to La Rochelle, the market of the district of Pallice. Open every Sunday morning from 8h to 13h it extends widely into two parts with on one side the street vendors selling clothes, hats, accessories and other objects of all kinds and on the other, the food and drinks area. small halls.

More eccentric downtown, west of La Rochelle, this market is well known to the people of La Rochelle who have all their habits. Here we find his favorite shopkeeper, we meet a neighbor, family or friends... in a friendly and popular.

Primeurs, market gardeners, fishmongers, oyster farmers, cheese makers, delicatessens, poultry farmers, caterers, bakers... give you mouth-watering in this great place that comes alive every weekend of the year with a thousand colors and a thousand smells!

Market
46bis, Rue du 8 Mai - Puilboreau

It is under the Halles of the nineteenth century and in the heart of the Old City, that takes place the market of La Rochelle. Wednesdays and Saturdays are big market days. Here the cheese stalls, florists and early vegetables extend into the neighboring streets. Open every morning and every day of the year until 1:30 pm.

The market was built from 1834 to 1836 on the site of the Grande Boucherie, the first meat market in the city. It is the place to be if you want to indulge in local products. The charm of this market is also due to the many terraces of cafes and pubs that surround it and allow you to enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the market in the early morning and at the time of the aperitif.

On the market, an entire aisle is dedicated to seafood: bar, cuttlefish, sardines, shrimps, oysters and mussels... fishmongers, oyster farmers and mussel growers welcome you. Some traders have been on the market for several generations in the image of Chez Mélie who has been expanding his bench since 1891
