Benefiting from the peaceful and green environment of the Comminges hills, the beautiful hilltop village of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges is famous for its cathedral. Situated on the Way of St James (Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route), the Sainte-Marie cathedral majestically dominates the picturesque houses of the town. Famous for its cloister, the Romano-Gothic cathedral is also well-known for the magnificent wooden panelling it holds. The canons chancel is indeed particularly sumptuous with its rood screen, its fence and its 66 carved wooden stalls. The cloister of the cathedral consists of four galleries, among which three are of Romanesque style and one of Gothic style. The sarcophaguses situated in the North gallery, as well as a carved pillar representing four evangelists are also visible there. The Midi gallery overlooking the surrounding green hills offers a beautiful view of the unspoiled landscapes of the Comminges.
The medieval castle of Mauvezin, which dominates the Les Baronnies area, is home to a history and folk museum in six of its rooms. Visitors can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding scenery from the top of its keep.
The Little Amazon of the Pyrenees or Gourgue d'Asque in Occitan is a natural area consisting of gorges located along the upper course of the Arros, upstream of the French commune of Asque (Hautes-Pyrénées) in the region of Baronnies des Pyrénées.
This place with a humidity level close to saturation has allowed the development of a large lush forest of centuries-old boxwood with the appearance of jungle, with its trees and rocks covered with mosses, lichens and ferns – including giant scolopendra (Phyllitis scolopendrium (L.) Newman) – giving it a tropical appearance.
Access to the gourgue of Asque is by taking the path of the Gourgue, from the junction of the D26 in the hamlet of Couret (commune of Asque) to a car park. The discovery and interpretation trail begins here. After passing the bridge of the lock of Asque, a smaller path leads to the Oueil de l'Arros (resurgence of the Arros).
Towering over the pretty village of Simorre and Astarac country from the top of its towers and crenellations, the pretty Abbey Church of Our Lady was built in the 14th century, then renovated by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. Around the fortified church, you can take a walk through the picturesque streets and squares, lined with half-timbered houses with corbels.
Nestling in the heart of the Bigorre area between Col d'Aspin and Col Peyresourde mountain passes at the confluence of the Neste d'Aure and Neste du Louron rivers, the pleasant village of Arreau forms a beautiful group of buildings: period homes like the Maison des Lys and Château des Nestes, the covered market and pretty old slate-roofed houses.
