(Excerpts from Wikipedia -> https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pula)
Pula (Italian: Pola; Slovene: Pulj) is a city and municipality located in Istria, in Istria County, Croatia.
At the 2001 census, the municipality had 58,594 inhabitants, of whom 71.65% were Croats, 5.83% Serbs, and 4.82% Italians; 8.28% of the inhabitants did not indicate an ethnic affiliation.
It is a bilingual Croatian/Italian municipality. Pula is the only locality within the municipality.
Pula encompasses a number of different architectural styles within a small area. Roman temples stand in stark contrast to Baroque palaces, Christian churches face Austrian villas, and sections of medieval walls stand alongside buildings dating back to antiquity.

The division of Julian Venetia between June 1945 and September 1947: in lilac, Zone A (American-British occupation, Italian civil administration) ; in green, Zone B (Yugoslav occupation and civil administration) ; in red, the "Morgan Line" that separated them; the Free Territory of Trieste in yellow overlay; and the 1954 border in blue (through which Pula became Yugoslav), formalized by the Treaty of Osimo.
The history of the city of Pula dates back almost 3,000 years. A local legend places the myth of the Argonauts, in search of the Golden Fleece, not in the Black Sea, but in the Adriatic Sea, and makes them the founders of Polis, the future Pula. In fact, there was indeed a Greek colony in the surrounding area, on the island of Cres (Chersos in Greek) where they founded the colony of Apsoris.
One of the most important buildings in the city is the Roman amphitheater of Pula, arena in Latin[6]. The ancient Roman city of Pola also contains a Temple of Augustus, the former Capitol of the forum (now a town hall), a triumphal arch (the Arch of the Sergii), a ruined city wall, and the remains (including the facade) of two ancient theaters. Recent excavations have uncovered the foundations of various Roman districts; work was still ongoing (2006). After belonging to the Byzantine Theme of Dalmatia, Pola became a Venetian possession in the 14th century. Fortified by the French military engineer Antoine de Ville, the city established itself in the 19th century as the main naval base of Austria-Hungary and was reinforced accordingly. Pola housed an astronomical observatory and the hydrographic service of the Austro-Hungarian Navy. The city was then multicultural: there was a majority of Italians as well as a strong presence of Austrians, Slavs, and other nationalities in the city and its surroundings. Following the First World War, Italian troops occupied Pola, which was annexed to Italy like the rest of Istria. At the end of the Second World War, on May 4,1945, the city was captured by Yugoslav troops. It was occupied by Anglo-American troops. In 1947, within a few months, 28,058 Italians out of a population of approximately 31,000 left the city to escape the foibe massacres and chose exile. The Vergarolla explosion contributed to an anti-Italian atmosphere. The houses and properties of exiled Italians were immediately occupied by Yugoslav citizens brought in by Tito's regime from the rest of the country. Then, in 1954, it was incorporated into Yugoslavia (under the name "Pula"), as had the rest of the Istrian peninsula since 1947. The city's cession was ratified by the 1975 Treaty of Osimo. In 1995, Croatia won the Croatian War of Independence and gained its independence. Pula is Croatian.
Pula is the terminus of the EuroVelo 9 cycle route, which starts in Gdańsk on the Baltic Sea and crosses Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia.
Pula International Airport is operated by various low-cost carriers (Ryanair, etc.) and the national airline, Croatia Airlines, but most flights connect through Trieste or Zagreb.
In 1870, the world's first maritime museum, located in Austria, was established in Pula. The Yugoslav intelligentsia resided on the islands off the coast of Pula during the summer, as did Marshal Tito, whose residence was opened to the public in 2005.
Pula hosts an international film festival, the Pula Film Festival.
