A feudal fortress

Feudal fortress, the Rambures castle is a remarkable example of the 15th-century military architecture. Built during the Hundred Years' war, this brick and stone castle is flanked by four machicolated round towers. Open to visitors, the interior houses a collection of antique Picardy furniture, as well as the bedroom where the Henri IV king stayed.

Outside the fortified castle, the wooded, very peaceful park, and the charming rose garden are a lovely place for a stroll.

The town of Poix-de-Picardie, a designated Green resort (Station Verte, one that pays particular attention to its natural environment), is dominated by the silhouette of its 16th-century late Gothic church. From the church there's a beautiful view over the roofs of the town and surrounding woodlands.

The village of Saint-Riquier possesses a magnificent abbey church of Flamboyant Gothic style. The facade of this building of the 16th century boasts magnificent carved ornaments. Nearby, the abbatial buildings are home to the rural life museum.

The village also boasts a belfry inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Both a seaside resort and a medieval town

Seaside resort of the Bay of Somme, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme is also a charming medieval town. It is a very popular destination thanks to its history-filled upper town overlooking the bay, narrow flower-filled streets, sailing and fishing harbour and beautiful sea-wall promenade lined with villas.

Also not to be missed, the Herbarium des Remparts, a walled medieval garden containing, among others, rare vegetables and plants from the Picardy Coast.

Fans of tradition should head to the Picarvie museum, which is dedicated to the trades of yesteryear.

Tourist site
Its seafront is a listed conservation area

Mers-les-Bains is a charming seaside resort, one of the first in France, that has retained all its 19th-century style with belle-époque and Art Nouveau villas lining the beach-front esplanade. The beautiful, unspoiled seafront is a listed conservation area. Besides this wonderful built heritage, the resort boasts beautiful white cliffs.

Tourist site
The capital of Picardy, famous for its Gothic cathedral

Capital of Picardy and city of Art and history, Amiens possesses a gem of Gothic art : the Notre-Dame cathedral. UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cathedral of Amiens is, with its 145-metre length and its 42-metre height, the biggest cathedral in France! It is also a beautifully homogenous building – explained by the fact that it was built within a century. Its magnificent facade and richly decorated portal are truly stunning and feature exceptional statuary. Inside, the 110 oak stalls in the chancel are also remarkable.

A must-see colourful show of illuminations on the cathedral's portal takes place every evening in the summer and the month of December. This is a moment when the spectator can admire the original colours, which used to decorate the facade of the Notre-Dame cathedral in the Middle Ages.

Not far from the cathedral is the Saint-Leu medieval district nicknamed "Little Venice of the North". This former tanners', weavers' and dyers' district is really charming with its small colourful houses sitting along the canals. Walkers can enjoy a beautiful view of the cathedral from Pont de la Dodane bridge. Numerous restaurant and café terraces along the water provide pleasant and relaxing places to stop.

Other places of interest in the historic centre are the shopping streets and monuments all around the cathedral, including the King's lodge (Logis du Roi), the Sagittarius house (Maison du Sagittaire), the bailiwick house (Maison du Bailliage) and the belfry.

Amiens also boasts several interesting museums: the Picardy museum is home to collections of archaeology, sacred art, painting and sculpture; the Hôtel de Berny museum contains objets d'art and antique furniture; while the Maison de Jules Verne, where the famous writer lived for 18 years, houses souvenirs, objects and documents relating to him.

A 300-hectare marsh full of pretty little floating gardens surrounded by canals

Les Hortillonnages d'Amiens, located near the historic centre, are 300 hectares of must-see marshland made up of pretty little floating gardens, formerly all given over to market gardening, surrounded by canals. Some plots are still used for growing fruit and vegetables today. A walk along the old towpath gives a good introduction to the site. But to properly explore these wonderful secret gardens, which often feature delightful little huts and houses, there is nothing like a trip on a traditional hortillonnages boat – the barque à cornet.

Every Saturday morning, the market gardeners from les hortillonnages sell their produce in Place Parmentier square in Amiens. A big festival every June features a traditional market on the water.

Come and enjoy a unique sensory experience in this utterly charming village, whose symbol is the rose!

Lovers of flowers and roses, welcome to Gerberoy. Known as the "village of a thousand rose bushes", this charming little town in Oise offers a wonderful sensory experience. Climbing roses, hydrangeas, wisteria, daisies and other plants... an explosion of scents and a festival of colours await you! The painter Le Sidaner fell in love with this village and created superb terraced gardens on the very ruins of the 19th-century castle.

The cobbled lanes, old cob houses with colourful timber work from the 17th and 18th centuries, ramparts and Charlemagne Tower add a certain cachet to the village. Not to mention the mini-vineyard, full of undeniable rural charm.

Every first weekend in June, the village hosts the Rose Festival, an unmissable event with a delightfully festive and romantic atmosphere.

A great destination for the nature lovers

With its 7200 hectares the Bay of Somme is the largest estuary of the North of France. It is an unspoiled place composed of vast areas alternating between dunes, marshes and salt meadows.

Situated on the route of the migrating birds, the Nature reserve of the Bay of Somme, and especially the Marquenterre park, is a peaceful haven for numerous wild birds stopping here to rest. The Bay of Somme also has the unusual feature of being home to a seal colony.

To discover the rich fauna and flora of the Bay of Somme, head to the Marquenterre ornithological park, and the Bay of Somme and bird centre (Maison de la Baie de Somme et de l'Oiseau) in Lanchères.

The Bird and Nature festival, which takes place in April on the Picardy Coast in Abbeville, offers conferences, exhibitions and outings in relation with Nature and ornithology.

The small steam train connecting Le Crotoy to Cayeux-sur-Mer is a wonderful way to discover the landscapes of the Bay of Somme.

Its chapel, its belfry...

It is in the town of Rue that visitors and religious art lovers can discover a remarkable example of the late Gothic architecture: the Saint-Esprit chapel. This building of the 15th and 16th centuries boasts a richly carved facade. Inside, the vaulted ceilings are decorated with hanging keystones.

The town also boasts a belfry inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list that houses a museum dedicated to the pioneers of aviation in Picardy, the Caudron brothers.

Tourist site
A place of history, culture and nature

Not far from Beauvais, Troissereux Castle in Oise is a pretty Renaissance house built from brick and stone in the 15th and 16th centuries. When you visit, the owners will be delighted to show you around their castle and especially the unusually-shaped alchemy tower: it is round at the base with a square area on top ending in a triangular shape. This is where the medieval clock used to be, but it has since been transferred to the chapel.

Before you leave, take a walk around the tree-lined park, designed by Bernard Palissy in the 16th century. You will see many trees from that period such as Oriental planes or bald cypresses brought back by the Marquis de Lafayette from a trip to the Americas in the 18th century. This park also has an ornithological reserve where many wild birds live.

Troissereux Castle is where you will find the largest bat maternity colony in Picardy: that of the greater mouse-eared bat. This event is celebrated on bat night every year at the end of August.

Wild birds' paradise

Situated in the Nature reserve of the Bay of Somme, the Marquenterre ornithological park is a wild birds paradise. This 250-hectare natural area composed of marshes, dunes and forests, is a favourite place for migratory birds such as eurasian spoonbills, little egrets, and barnacle geese.

There are several trails dotted with birdwatching hides so visitors can discover and admire the birds without disturbing them.

The Valloires gardens, a place great for mediation...

Situated in Argoules in the green valley of Authie, the Valloires abbey was built in the 12th century. Magnificent gardens extend today around this Cistercian abbey, with a multitude of plants, flowers and shrubs. This 9-hectare site boasts no fewer than 5,000 varieties of plants and shrubs! A perfect location for gardens lovers... It also features rose, formal and landscape gardens (island garden) as well as marsh, evolution and five senses gardens.

In August, the abbey hosts an international chamber music festival, the Valloires festival.

Get away from it all at the heart of Norman country

Straddling the departments of Seine-Maritime and Oise, Pays de Bray is a territory of lush green meadows, hedged farmland, hills, valleys and forests. These idyllic landscapes are ideal for scenic walks and a variety of outdoor activities. Don stout footwear to explore Eawy forest, a beech forest of around 7,000 hectares criss-crossed with marked paths, and listen to your voice echo at the Puits Merveilleux, a 25-metre-deep chasm whose name means "Marvellous Well"!

Running along an old railway line, the Avenue Verte London-Paris, a greenway starting in Dieppe, is ideal for a bike ride or rollerblading. It will take you through the most beautiful villages in the area.

Pays de Bray is also known for its pretty towns like Forges-les-Eaux, Neufchâtel-en-Bray or Gournay-en-Bray. Take a detour via one of the many farms and stock up on local products like cider, pommeau or the famous Neufchâtel cheese to give your taste buds a treat.

Another curiosity is La Boutonnière, a buttonhole-shaped geological depression running from Dieppe to Beauvais. To explore it, you can follow the Landscapes Route, a complete circuit through Pays de Bray with orientation tables along the way.
