One of the island's most beautiful beaches!

Located on the west coast of Réunion, between Cape La Houssaye and the seaside resort of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, in the municipality of Saint-Paul, Boucan Canot is considered one of the island's most beautiful beaches and offers a magnificent expanse of white sand that's ideal for sunbathing. Along the beach, a pedestrian esplanade welcomes you for a moment of relaxation, with its café terraces, bars, snack bars and restaurants. A very pleasant place to take a stroll or cool off while sipping a glass of fresh fruit juice, opposite the Indian Ocean… As the sandy beach is not protected by a coral reef, a vast bathing area of eight hectares secured by anti-shark nets enables water sports enthusiasts to enjoy swimming and surfing.

Its collections recreate the living environment of a rich Creole family in the 18th and 19th centuries
02 62 55 64 10

An old colonial property in the heights of Saint-Paul in Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts, the Villèle estate nowadays houses a museum telling the story of a rich family of colonists who shaped the history of the island in the 18th and 19th centuries. Now open to the public, the mansion that was once home to Madame Desbassayns, an iconic and controversial figure in the history of Réunion, recreates the living environment of the Desbassayns family during the dark times of slave-trading, with period furniture, historical documents and decorative art objects.

After visiting the history museum's permanent and temporary collections, the tour of the Villèle estate continues with the lush garden, the old slaves' hospital, the kitchen, the sugar factory ruins and the charming chapel, named Chapelle Pointue. This listed Historic Monument is architecturally original, shaped like a rotunda with a tall, pointed roof on top. Built in the 19th century at the request of Madame Desbassayns, it contains her tomb as well as a polychrome statue of St. Michael.

Not far from the estate, towards L'Éperon, shopaholics will find all they could wish for in the studios and boutiques of the craft village. Based on the site of an old sugar factory, this welcoming and relaxing place is sure to tempt you with its pottery, ceramics, stained glass, jewellery, clothing and other decorative objects!

An open-air market, marine cemetery, sandy beaches and more…

Tucked away from the wind and the sea swell, along the north-west coast of Réunion, the municipality of Saint-Paul offers a good many leisure and sightseeing opportunities to its visitors in search of a change of scene and a chance to unwind. Its vast territory indeed includes the island's most beautiful beaches. Those of Boucan Canot, L'Ermitage and Saline-les-Bains, to name but a few, will delight you with their fine sand and wonderful swimming waters! Meanwhile, sports enthusiasts can enjoy a range of water sports such as sea kayaking, sailing and snorkelling.

If you are in the area at the end of the week, don't miss the famous open-air market in Saint-Paul, which is held every Friday and Saturday morning on the seafront esplanade. Considered as one of Réunion's most picturesque markets, this colourful, flavourful event is sure to charm you, with its wonderful stands of local fruit and vegetables, spices, chilli peppers, honey and crafts. During your shopping trip, be sure to take a break and try the delicious chilli pepper sweets, samosas and other Creole specialities available there! A real treat…

Not far from there, you can take a little walk to the Saint-Paul wharf to admire the bay and the Indian Ocean, before heading to the charming Place du Général de Gaulle, located in the city centre, where you can not only see the elegant façade of the city hall but also relax near the fountain, in the shade of the trees and palms. Joggers and walkers will enjoy a trip to the Saint-Paul pond, a protected area and listed National Nature Reserve, or they might opt for a walk or run along the sea, maybe following the pleasant fitness trail in the national forest.

At the southern exit from the city, towards Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, lies the Saint-Paul marine cemetery, a particularly picturesque site and a listed historic monument. Established next to the ocean along a beautiful black sand beach, this unique place contains the graves of famous people like the poet Leconte de Lisle, the painter Arthur Grimaud or the pirate Olivier Levasseur aka La Buse (The Buzzard). Opposite the cemetery, on the other side of the main road, you can enjoy a very pleasant picnic in the Premiers Français cave park. This cavern, now closed to the public, is where the island's first French settlers are thought to have found refuge…

An awareness-raising, research and treatment centre for these protected species
46 Rue General de Gaulle
02 62 34 81 10

Located by the seaside on the west coast of Réunion, at the north exit of the town of Saint-Leu, the Kélonia site is not just a place for raising awareness of the environment and sea turtles; it is also a research and treatment centre for these protected species. At the centre, sick or injured turtles are cared for before being released into the ocean once they have recovered.

Open to visitors, the sea turtle observatory has a three-part museum trail for you to follow: the Discovery area, where you can see the various environments inhabited by these marine reptiles during the course of their biological cycle, and admire several species of sea turtles in a huge open-air pool; the Confrontation room, where the exhibition documents the close links between human societies and sea turtles in different eras and places; and the Future area, equipped with multimedia and interactive displays, addressing the issue of how to preserve these endangered species and their habitats.

For a scenic way to round off your visit, be sure to go up to the top of the observation tower. From there you will have a lovely view of Kélonia's pools and the Bay of Saint-Leu! Before leaving the area, you can also pay a visit to the centre's gift shop selling local craft items.

Owned by the Coast Conservatory and located on Réunion's west coast, to the south of the seaside resort of Saint-Leu, the Pointe au Sel headland is a protected natural site where the plant life is preserved. Its name meaning "salt headland" comes from the presence of salt pans in the area. The only place on the island where salt is still made, this unique spot has its own wonderful Salt Museum which you are welcome to visit. Based in the old building that was once used to store salt, it has a permanent exhibition about the famous condiment and the salt pans of the Indian Ocean. After your visit, you might be lucky enough to see the salt workers in action, applying skills they have kept alive there since 1942...

A very beautiful itinerary through the Hauts area of the island

In the Hauts area of the island, between Saint-Paul and Les Avirons, is a beautiful forest itinerary stretching for around 30 kilometres and connecting the Maïdo road with the Tévelave road. Lined by Tamarinds as its name implies, this pleasant little road through the Hauts forest is the starting point for several hiking circuits in the countryside. Those who enjoy lunching in the open air will also be thrilled, as the approach to this magnificent road trail is dotted with picnic tables. An ideal setting in the leafy heart of Réunion, to rest and recuperate or enjoy a walk with family and friends!

An exceptional viewpoint of the Mafate cirque!

Accessible from the Le Guillaume district in Saint-Paul via a long, winding road, the belvedere on the Piton Maïdo peak is a must-see sight on the island of Réunion. Perched at an altitude of 2,205 metres, this impressive cliff-edge balcony not only offers an exceptional view of the famous natural cirque of Mafate and its dizzying ramparts, but also a magnificent view of the island's west coast ! To fully appreciate these unique landscapes, you must get there early in the morning, before the clouds come in…

As you go back down towards Le Guillaume, you can take a short break at one of the many picnic kiosks along the roadside, some of which even enjoy direct views of the coastline and the Indian Ocean !

A really beautiful view of Mafate!

Dos d'Âne, a small village in the hills around the municipality of La Possession, is the starting point for many hiking trails including the one that goes via the famous Cape Noir belvedere. Lasting around two hours, the short circular walk around the rock named Roche Verre Bouteille will first take you to the deep valley of the Galets river, before arriving at the remarkable site of the Cape Noir peak. From this marvellous belvedere, which has a kiosk and orientation table, on a clear morning you can enjoy outstanding views of the natural cirque of Mafate! Walkers then have two options: those wishing for a shorter walk can go back to the starting point the way they came (15 minutes approximately); those wishing to continue along the circuit can carry on towards the ridge, climbing up several secure metal ladders to reach the Roche Verre Bouteille, a vertical rock whose name means "Bottle Glass Rock", a reference to its bottle-like shape. An impressive trail where you can not only admire Mafate but also Dos d'Âne and the island's west coast…

Walks and picnics in store!

A vast, green territory that once provided refuge for fugitive slaves known as "les marrons", the Tévelave forest in the hills around Les Avirons offers walking fans some very scenic footpaths, like the Tamarinds Path or the Workers' Path. The Papangues observatory, deep in the heart of nature, will delight all those looking to spot the famous Réunion Marsh Harrier, the only nesting raptor native to Réunion...

Surrounded by beautiful plant varieties, the Tévelave forest road is also lined with picnic kiosks, which are perfect for a day out with the family! Those who enjoy lunching outdoors will also have the option to stop at the picnic area in the small village of Tévelave, a very pleasant site which has a snack bar and pétanque pitch.

A haven for hikers and other nature-lovers…

A true gem in the Hauts of Réunion, located in the municipalities of Saint-Paul and La Possession, Mafate has the particularity of being the only cirque on the island to be accessible only by foot or by helicopter. A listed UNESCO World Heritage Site like its neighbours Cilaos and Salazie, this exceptional, unspoilt territory protected from the nuisance of motor traffic is home to incredible biodiversity, full of native species. A haven for hikers and other nature-lovers, with around 180 kilometres and landscaped paths, this haven of peace and tranquillity, surrounded by dizzying ramparts, will leave you with unforgettable memories… A totally unique place where you can not only admire fantastic wild landscapes, but also meet the residents of Mafate, of which there are around 750 inhabiting the nine islets of the cirque. This adventure will be even more unforgettable if you spend the night there, in one of the gîtes with tables d'hôte dining. A great opportunity to socialise and also appreciate the very special, serene atmosphere of the area…

Several walks of varying lengths and levels of difficulties provide access to the heart of the Mafate cirque. The most classic and easiest itinerary (4h30 return trip - 700 metres change in altitude) starts at the Col des Boeufs, accessible from Salazie, leading to the islet of La Nouvelle, the most populated village of Mafate, via the magnificent and mysterious Tamarind Plain full of twisted trees. Popular with walkers looking for a place to stop for lunch or for the night, the village of La Nouvelle will delight you with its little wooden chalets, charming church, scenic grassy paths and idyllic environment.

You can also go to Mafate from Cilaos, taking the uphill path to the Col du Taïbit pass (3 hours' ascent - 800 metres change in altitude - difficult), an itinerary best travelled in the early morning, before the clouds come along and obstruct your view… Once you reach the pass, the effort exerted on the way up is rewarded by an exceptional panoramic view, not just over the Cilaos cirque but also over Mafate! After a well-deserved short break, the hike continues downhill (1-hour walk) to the islet of Marla, a charming little hamlet surrounded by pastures nestled at the foot of the Grand Bénare, at 1,645 metres in altitude, where you can stop at a snack bar or spend the night in one of its gîtes or B&Bs. From there, you can go to the famous Three Rocks (Trois Roches) site, by taking a steep path going down along the Galets river. Located halfway between Marla and the islet of Roche Plate, this unique natural site will impress you with its three large basalt blocks and its beautiful waterfall plunging into a deep chasm. An exceptional place, but also a hazardous one, so care must be taken! You then have several options: return to Marla or go to the islet of Roche Plate or La Nouvelle, where there are many paths waiting for you to discover the countless natural riches and little villages of Mafate, like the islet of Les Orangers, the islet of Malheur or Aurère!
