A verdant land of valleys, famous for its poultry farms

Famous for its poultry farms and foie gras, La Chalosse, in the heart of the Landes countryside, is characterised by its gentle scenery, with small woods and verdant valleys.

The Chalosse Museum, in a mansion at Montfort-en-Chalosse, is not to be missed. There you can learn about the agricultural and viticultural way of life in Chalosse in the 19th century, by seeing the collections of furniture, objects and tools of everyday life in the past. A visit to the Carcher estate will also enable you to admire the house and kitchen garden of a tenant farmer, the wine cellar and its impressive wine press, the vine conservatory and a working bread oven.

Another interesting place is the village of Mugron, nicknamed the Belvedere of Chalosse, where you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Adour plain and the Landes forest from the delightful, flower-bedecked town hall park.

A Landes farm, near the village of Pouy, five kilometres north-east of the spa resort of Dax, is where the illustrious St Vincent de Paul was born, on 24 April 1581. 7 Place du Tour de Sol, Saint-Sever

Classed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site as part of the Way of St James, Saint-Sever Abbey-Church, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, is renowned for its rich, sculpted décor and its choir with six staggered apse chapels. The 77 Romanesque capitals, five marble columns, and three re-used Gallo-Roman capitals are all marvels for which this historic monument is renowned. Take a moment to admire the sculptures on its polychromatic marble capitals, before strolling for a while in the delightful cloister garden of the former Benedictine abbey. Then you can discover the treasure stored in the chapter house, with its exhibition of liturgical objects and vestments from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Explore the heritage of Samadet earthenware...

In the heart of Tursan, in the commune of Samadet, at 2378 Route d'Hagetmau, the Departmental Museum of Earthenware and Tableware has three permanent exhibition rooms telling the story of Samadet's former royal factory - operating from 1732 to 1840 –and its earthenware production, the processes involved in making and decorating the earthenware, as well as the world of tableware and French gastronomy from the Middle Ages to modern times. In the room dedicated to Samadet earthenware, 300 variously-decorated pieces are on show, organised chronologically and thematically!

The House of Contemporary Ceramics, situated in Tursan's Cultural Centre, has a permanent collection relating to tableware, as well as its temporary exhibitions.

The Old Bridge, the Moncade Tower, the Jeanne d'Albret Museum...

The capital of Béarn for two centuries, the town of Orthez, whose history was shaped by famous figures such as Gaston VII of Moncade, Gaston Phoebus and Jeanne d'Albret, boasts a fine architectural heritage, from the picturesque Old Bridge (Pont Vieux) on the Gave de Pau to the imposing Moncade Tower, through the elegant house of Jeanne d'Albret.

A relic of the fortress built in the 13th century by Gaston VII Moncade, the Moncade Tower, perched in the heights of Orthez, has a terrace with a superb view of the roofs of the old town and the surrounding area. A sound and light model telling the story of the castle fort, as well as an exhibition on the medieval life and history of Gaston Phoebus, complete the tour of the keep.

On the way back down towards the mountain stream or gave, be sure to stop by the house of Jeanne d'Albret. This house built in the 15th and 16th centuries is now home to a museum about the history of Protestantism in Béarn.

And if you want to stock up on fresh produce, don't miss the traditional market which takes place on Tuesday mornings from La Moutète to Place Saint-Pierre!

A salt town and a spa resort full of picturesque charm

A salt town and spa resort, Salies-de-Béarn delights lovers of old buildings thank to its picturesque looks. The Place de Bayaà, with its Boar Fountain, pretty flowered streets and old houses on stilts by the Saleys make it a charming destination.

The Salt Museum, located in the heart of the old town in a 17th-century house, is dedicated to the history of Salies-de-Béarn and its eventful history tied to the presence of salt in its groundwater.

Then head for the spa quarter, with its thermal baths in the Moorish style, its Belle Époque buildings, the casino and its public garden with a bandstand and mini-golf course. It's also an opportunity to unwind and enjoy a relaxing time as you appreciate the benefits of a thermal spa treatment!

The Salt Festival takes place each year in September, with a cured food market, inauguration ceremony, traditional songs and dances, parade of floats and lively banquet.

The town of three rivers

The Landes capital, Mont-de-Marsan, town of three rivers, has a favoured geographical position on the border of the Landes forest and mid-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrenees.

This sculpture hotspot will delight lovers of modern and contemporary art in particular, with its remarkable Despiau-Wlérick Museum, devoted to 20th century figurative sculpture, and its Mont de Marsan Sculptures festival which takes place every three years. Established in the ancient Romanesque chapel and the impressive Lacataye medieval keep, the museum is organised around the work of two local sculptors, Charles Despiau and Robert Wlérick, as well as pieces by about a hundred artists from the beginning of the 20th century. The Despiau-Wlérick Museum also has a garden of sculpture on the banks of the Midou, a library, and a beautiful panoramic view of the town and its surrounding countryside, from the terrace of the Lacataye tower.

Those who like walking can stroll to their hearts' content strolling in the delightful Jean-Rameau Park, which stretches along a loop in the River Douze. This is a verdant six-hectare setting where you can discover remarkable plants, sculptures by Charles Despiau, a bandstand, a children's play area, as well as a Japanese garden, ferns, hydrangeas and grasses.

In the third week of July, during the Madeleine Festival, Mont-de-Marsan is abuzz with musical entertainment, courses landaises (blood-free cow fighting), parades and a funfair. A great atmosphere is guaranteed!

In the south of the Landes, by the Gave d'Oloron river, on the Way of St James, you can discover the church and the remains of the Abbey of St John in Sorde-l'Abbaye.

Founded in the 10th century, then reworked many times in the course of its history, this former Benedictine monastery is now open to the public for guided tours, during which you can see its chapter house, refectory, cloister, terrace overlooking the river and the exceptional cryptoportico, a 70-metre-long subterranean gallery! The abbey church, for its part, has a superb Romanesque mosaic in its choir...

Landes Departmental Heritage Centre

Founded in 1167 by the Premonstratensian Monks of Case-Dieu, the former abbey of St Mary in Arthous, situated on the Way of St James and in the commune of Hastingues, near the Basque Country, is today home to the Landes Departmental Heritage Centre. Dating from the 12th century, its Romanesque church has a splendid chevet decorated with 59 corbels and 9 capitals with plant and historical motifs!

Interactive and amusing, the abbey museum houses archaeological collections relating to the heritage of the Orthe area, from Prehistory to the Gallo-Roman period.

Each Whitsun weekend, the International Ceramic Festival is held at Arthous Abbey. With more than 70 exhibitors, activities and conferences, it is the biggest market for ceramicists in Aquitaine!

The Pearl of Béarn

Perched on a gentle promontory above the rushing waters of the Gave d'Oloron, the medieval town of Sauveterre-de-Béarn not only has a remarkable architectural heritage, but also a wonderful natural environment...

This particularly harmonious scene can be admired from the picturesque Legend Bridge (Pont de La Légende). A listed Historical Monument, of which an arch and a fortified gate remain, it once played an important role in the defence of the town. Take the time to soak up the atmosphere at this wonderful site, admiring the view of the Gave d'Oloron surrounded by greenery, the Monréal Tower, the bell-tower of the Church of St Andrew and the walls of Sauveterre-de-Béarn.

There are also beautiful views from the heights, and more specifically from the terrace of the church, where you can admire a relaxing, verdant landscape overlooked by the Pyrenees in the distance... Near the viewpoint, the fortified church built in the 12th and 13th centuries is worth visiting for its tympanum and carved capitals. Another landmark in the village, the mighty Monreal tower, is a former keep standing 33 metres tall, built in the 12th century to protect the town.

A trip to Sauveterre-de-Béarn is also an opportunity to go canoeing-kayaking, fishing or stroll along the educational trail at Glère Island, a classified Sensitive Natural Area.

Explore the Landes Amazon...

Nestling in a verdant setting, Lake Léon invites you to relax and recuperate. A peaceful and restful place, great for fishing, a canoe-kayak trip, a relaxing spell on the beach or a walk along its shady banks...

It is at Lake Léon that the River Huchet begins its journey towards the Atlantic coast. A real umbilical cord between lake and ocean, this little coastal river and its surrounding marshes are listed as a National Nature Reserve. This is wild and magnificent country, where remarkable flora and fauna have evolved... Nicknamed the Landes Amazon, this protected land, both lush and mysterious, is best explored at a leisurely pace, along a forest path starting at the Pichelèbe bridge, or taking a trip in a traditional boat, which will bring you to the mouth of the River Huchet at Moliets-et-Maa beach.

The House of the Reserve (Maison de la Réserve) on the edge of Lake Léon has a permanent exhibition of the natural heritage of the reserve, and throughout the year organises guided walking tours and themed outings.

The Gascon Landes forest, the most extensive in Europe!

Situated in the north of Landes and the south of Gironde, to the east of the Atlantic coast and the banks of the Arcachon basin, the Gascon Landes Regional Nature Park covers at least 315,000 hectares. Planted by man in the 19th century, with the aim of reclaiming the marshes and stabilising the moving sands of the coastal dunes, the Gascon Landes forest, mainly made up of maritime pines, is the most extensive forest in Europe!

In the heart of the Landes forest you can explore the unmissable Grande Lande Ecomuseum, constructed on three sites which are open to visitors: the Marquèze Quarter, at Sabres, a part of the Grande Lande reconstructed as it was in the 19th century; the Luxey resinous products workshop, a former workshop where pine resin was distilled; the museum of religious heritage and popular beliefs, situated in the Church of Our Lady in Moustey. The Marquèze Quarter is only accessible by train from Sabres station, and is arranged around the airial – a vast lawn shaded by oaks - including mansions, smallholdings, sheep folds, bread ovens and a watermill, which show the agricultural, pastoral way of life in the 19th-century Landes countryside. Opposite Sabres station, the Marquèze Pavilion has a permanent exhibition for people to learn the history of the management of the Gascon Landes.

As to leisure sports, you have the choice between walking on woodland paths, cycling along the little forest trails, a mountain bike ride along signposted paths, a horse ride or a trip down the Leyre in a canoe-kayak...

Graine de Forêt, at Garein, is an entertaining and educational discovery centre, which has an interactive museum area dedicated to the Landes forest, a nature trail in the forest, and a nursery where everyone can sow a pine seed!

In Gironde, near Belin-Béliet, lies the departmental estate of Hostens, a must for those who want to recharge their batteries, relax or enjoy a walk. As well as a leisure centre, this Natura 2000-listed natural area of 600 hectares has five lakes with very pleasant green banks. An ideal place to take a nap on one of the two white sand beaches of Lake Lamothe, enjoy a refreshing swim, ride a canoe or go fishing, picnic quietly in the shade of the pines, discover the geological history, flora and fauna of the site by following a route lined with information signs, or go hiking, riding or cycling along the tracks and trails.

The Park House (La Maison du Parc), based in the old Belin-Béliet school building, provides the public with information and literature on the Landes of Gascony Nature Park.

A small Landes town in the Tursan, between Gers and Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Aire-sur-l'Adour has plenty of sights to see as you wander among its Historic Monuments and along the pleasant banks of the Adour.

Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as part of the Way of St James, the Church of St Quiteria, situated on the Mas hillside, is famous for its Gothic entrance and vast crypt. The latter is remarkable for holding the splendid, white marble sarcophagus of St Quiteria, dating from the 4th century!

Carry on exploring Aire-sur-l'Adour's heritage with a look at the octagonal, 19th-century corn exchange and the Cathedral of St John the Baptist, where there is wood panelling and an organ from the 18th century.

Then head for the banks of the Adour for a relaxing stroll or a picnic break by the waterside!

In the covered market on Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, there is a food market every Tuesday and Saturday morning.

An elegant Louis XIII-style dwelling in the heart of Lower Armagnac

Situated in the commune of Perquie, in Lower Armagnac, Ravignan Castle, built in 1663, is an elegant Louis XIII-style dwelling, surrounded by a beautiful French-style park. Inside this building, which is listed as a Historic Monument, ancient furniture and objects, 18th-century costumes, as well as an important collection of drawings and engravings showing Henry IV, are all pleasures to be discovered in the course of a guided tour.

As an Armagnac producer for more than three centuries, it is only natural that the Ravignan estate should organise guided tours of its cellars, with a commentary on the history and production of this famous eau-de-vie!
