Town with Provençal charm popular with artists

In the Provence hills, the chic little town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is very well popular with artists and key figures for its charming boulevards lined with plane trees, its pretty narrow streets, its shops, its cafés and restaurants, and its République square, very lively during market days.

Outside of the city is the Antiques plateau, the ancient town of Glanum. Beautiful Roman remains there include the mausoleum (18 metres in height), the municipal arch and the field of ancient ruins comprising temples, a forum, thermal baths, and an ornamental lake.

The Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery, hospice since the 18th century, is famous for having welcomed Vincent Van Gogh. Inspired by surrounding nature, the painter produced some of his most famous works there, such as the Sunflowers (Les Tournesols) and the Cypress (Les Cyprès).

A mountain range of remarkable biodiversity at the heart of Provence...

Welcome to one of France's smallest regional nature parks! Covering a total surface area of just 510 km², the Alpilles Park, created in 2007 in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône, is spread across a limestone mountain range near the charming small town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. This territory of abundant biodiversity combining wetlands and dry areas has been shaped by over 4,000 years of civilisation.

At the heart of the Alpilles range, you will see picturesque villages like Les Baux-de-Provence and Eygalières, as well as major archaeological sites such as the Caisses de Jean-Jean oppidum, the Roman site of Barbegal and the Fontvieille hypogea.

The Alpilles' magnificent scenery will also win over visitors in search of scenic walks, with its olive groves, vines, orchards, cypress hedges, garrigue scrubland and pine groves. The area's rural heritage is also very much in evidence, in the form of farmhouses, washhouses, chapels and oratories. Wildlife-lovers will be particularly spoilt in the Alpilles: around 250 bird species live there, including Bonelli's eagle, the lesser kestrel, the Egyptian vulture and the Eurasian eagle-owl.

An ideal place for outdoor activities, the park will also delight fans of rock climbing, hiking, horse-riding and mountain biking. On foot, on horseback or by bike, don't hesitate to explore the many marked trails that wind their way through this superb part of Provence!

The Vallée des Baux oil AOC (controlled appellation of origin) , which applies to the production of black and green olives and premium quality olive oil, is present on around 70% of the territory, with around 350,000 olive trees and around ten oil mills. These are fascinating curiosities for visiting tourists and gourmets, who will also appreciate the other renowned local products like goat's cheese and honey.

Its old town has preserved a fine heritage from its rich past

Beaucaire, a town of Art and History famous for its old fairs which drew crowds in the 17th and 19th centuries, sits by the Rhône river and the Rhône canal in Sète. It has preserved a number of beautiful monuments from its rich trading past. Overlooking the historical centre from the top of a hill, the medieval castle, built in the 11th century then partly dismantled in the 17th century by Richelieu, was the residence of the Counts of Toulouse and the Lords of Beaucaire. Today, its ruins including the polygonal tower, round corner tower, curtain walls and Romanesque chapel are a reminder of its glory days. Within the castle walls, visitors can look forward to a visit to the Auguste Jacquet archaeology and history museum, as well as a peaceful, shady garden with pines and cypress trees and a pretty view of the rooftops of the city.

Below the ramparts, carry on with your tour of Beaucaire and discover its squares and streets dotted with old houses and private mansions from the 17th and 18th centuries. The latter include the Hôtel de Clausonnette, the Hôtel de Margallier - or House of Caryatids – and the town hall. Also worth a look are the baroque-style collegiate church of Notre-Dame-des-Pommiers and the Place de la République square, which is quite charming with its old arches, pretty façades, fountain and plane trees.

The historic centre of this former city of the Popes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

City of the Popes from 1309 to 1376, the historic heart of Avignon is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Protected by its ramparts, the old town has preserved magnificent reminders of its past. Built in the 14th century, the Popes' palace is an essential place to visit while you are there. This fortress was the residence of the popes in the 14th century and is a magnificent Gothic palace split into two parts: the Old Palace and the New Palace.

The Palace square is also surrounded by other prestigious buildings, such as the “Petit Palais” (Small Palace), the former archbishops' residence which is now a museum housing a collection of paintings and sculptures; the Monnaies mansion and its 17th-century Baroque facade; but also the Notre-Dame-des-Doms cathedral built in the 12th century.

The Doms rock, which is the very origin of the city, is a pleasant hilltop garden offering a beautiful view of the River Rhone and especially of the Saint-Bénezet bridge, better known as the Pont d'Avignon.

The Horloge square, with its plane trees and its café terraces, is a very pleasant and lively place, especially during the Avignon festival. The Teinturiers street is very picturesque and is great for a walk along the River Sorgue and its pretty paddle wheels.

In July, the famous Avignon "In" and "Off" festival, is a great moment with good entertainments. The "In" festival, which takes place in the main courtyard of the Popes' palace, is dedicated to plays, concerts and dance. The "Off " festival offers numerous shows in the whole city.

It houses one of France's largest archaeological collections
04 13 31 51 03

The Departmental Museum of Ancient Arles was built on the site of the old Roman circus in 1995, to house the very rich archaeological collections of one of Bouches-du-Rhône's most beautiful cities.

The architect Henri Ciriani thus devised a "museum city" project that lets visitors explore the museum thematically and in chronological order, from the pre-Roman period to the post-Roman period, by strolling around as if they were in a city.

Through its various collections, the museum invites you to discover Arles in prehistoric and ancient times: Prehistory, Protohistory, the Early Roman Empire and Late Antiquity, but also the economic history of the city, a hub close to the ancient city of Massalia, funeral rites, and a superb set of mosaics.

The Museum of Ancient Arles is a very pleasant place to wander around, thanks to its large windows letting in natural light, and the variations of subtle lighting designed to enhance the look of the collections.

Guided tours are available to individuals, groups and schools alike. For example, the 1h30 trail named "the museum in 15 masterpieces" includes a look at the bust presumed to be of Jules Caesar, as well as models of monuments, mosaics, sculptures and sarcophaguses.

Be sure to explore the Hortus garden, a Roman-inspired garden designed to look like a circus, with its lawn for strolling, themed areas and water features.
