Weekly Markets :

The market is held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. A night market is organized in August.

Latin-Mexican holidays :

The Mexican… this is the nickname given to Barcelonnette.

Leaving during the harsh winter seasons of the high mountains, his children found, after the Caribbean Sea, a Mexico released from Spanish tutelage. On this new peddling ground, the Barcelonnettes will exert their double technical and commercial know-how ; it is in the nineteenth century that the inhabitants of the Ubaye Valley will expatriate to Mexico to work in the textile industry.

Barcelonnette today preserves from this epic an impressive architectural heritage characterized by many villas called Mexicans. These beautiful bourgeois mansions, commissioned by the emigrants who have returned to the rich country, testify to these profound ties ; many Ubayans maintain family ties, others still reside in Mexico.

Barcelonnette celebrates every summer the history of the valley with Mexico.

Dance, salsa, mariachi will be the watchwords for the new edition of Mexican Holidays this summer !

Jazz Children's Festival :

A musical rendezvous that brings together, in the heart of the small Alpine town of Barcelonnette, great international artists and more than a centiane of young people from all over France, jazz teachers in residence and internationally renowned artists who close this festival by three big concerts.

Alpes Adventure Motofestival :

No event brings together the family of motorcycle travelers, those who leave for a weekend or for a month, alone or with two, with motorcycle and luggage. This is the vocation of the Alpes Aventure Motofestivale oragnised in Barcelonnette, at the foot of the highest road in Europe : the pass of Bonette at 2802 m altitude. The backpackers bikers now have their festival, and no matter : in the park of Sapinière in Barcelonnette at the foot of the highest road in Europe, the pass of the Bonette at 2802 m altitude !

Whether you're on the road for a week-end, a week, a month or more, the Alpes Motofestival is for anyone who wants to go on a motorbike alone or in a group.

This festival brings together several thousand bikers, lovers of motorcycle travel, around manufacturers, equipment manufacturers and tour operators specializing in adventure and adventure, large or small.

On this occasion, road books are available to discover the chain of the Southern Alps and the 7 passes (Col de Vars, Col de la Bonette, Col Saint-Jean, Col des Fleurs, Col de la Cayolle, Pass d ' Allos, Larche Pass) immediately surrounding Barcelonnette and the immense cultural heritage of this region.

So, bikers, see you on 6/7/8 September 2019 !

Fair of Saint Michael :

An incontrounable rendezvous of the valley ! For its 18th edition, on September 29,2018, the place Aimé Gassier in Barcelonnette will host the trade fair coupled with the agricultural fair with sale of livestock, equipment, games, competitions, demonstration of mowing, technical stands, aperitif and meals.

The chief town of the Ubaye valley

Capital of the valley of Ubaye, the city of Barcelonnette, located at 1,135 meters above sea level, has a character both southern and mountain. Manuel Square, surrounded by pretty colorful facades, is the heart of the historic center. Dominated by the Cardinalis tower of the fifteenth century, this hot spot of local animation is embellished with pleasant terraces of cafes and restaurants. Around the square, the visit of Barcelonnette continues with the discovery of its pedestrian streets lined with shops.

Lovers of unusual architecture will not fail to admire the amazing Mexican villas located in the Avenue de la Liberation. Italian-inspired, Tyrolean and Baroque, these luxurious residences, mostly classified as historic monuments, were built between 1880 and 1930 by Barcelonnets who made their fortunes in Mexico. One of them is open to the public : the villa La Sapinière, which hosts the Museum of the Valley, dedicated to the history and traditions of the Ubaye Valley, as well as the House of Mercantour National Park.

Each year in August, the Latin-Mexican Festivals are held for ten days, a great moment of festivity during which concerts, parades and mariachis are held throughout the city.

The magic of the Alps of the sun…

With its peaks of over 3000 m altitude, its many glacial lakes and six valleys with a strong character, the Mercantour National Park is one hour from the sea, the unique jewel of a preserved nature.

A complex mix of Mediterranean and Alpine influences contributes to the originality and variety of landscapes, natural environments, fauna and flora ! The Mercantour Massif is the last promontory of the Alps, just before it dives into the Mediterranean Sea.

Browse the Mercantour is the guarantee of a permanent wonder : every turn of the way, a new amazing show awaits you. How is such a variety of impressions, sensations and landscapes possible ?

We must combine many sciences to have elements of answer : the geological formations, of very varied natures, were modeled by the alpine uprising, then dug and eroded by the waters in narrow and deep gorges.

The valleys have been heavily worked by glaciers, which have given way, by melting, to rosaries of sparkling lakes. Climate history has left us a wide variety of species at altitudes with environments close to those present during the ice ages.

The man and the traces several thousand years of his presence add to this natural abundance ! But this story is also written in the future : this territory sees the creation of many activities geared towards the future, a sign of great vitality.

This other wealth, cultural, is also the subject of many attentions. For the following generations to share this legacy.

Wild and abundant wildlife…

Chamois, ibex and mouflon coexist in the steepest mountain ridges, while deer, deer and boar frequent woodlands at lower altitudes.

The birds are also remarkably represented !

We find, for example, the black grouse, the rock ptarmigan, also known as the snow partridge, the snapper, but also large raptors like the golden eagle and now the bearded vulture gradually reintroduced by releases. Since 1993.

An exceptional flora in Europe !

The multiple climatic, geological and geographical influences exerted on a mosaic of very varied environments and with altitudes going from 100 m to more than 3000 m, conferred on the Mercantour an exceptional vegetable wealth with the presence of more than 2000 species of plants of the 4200 known in France.

Among them, 220 are considered very rare and 40 are even said to be endemic, being found nowhere else in the world, like saxifrage with multiple flowers !

A unique place in Europe !

A National Park is a space recognized as exceptional for its biodiversity, its landscapes, its heritage. It is both a label that guarantees national and international recognition of these riches and a tool that ensures their preservation at the highest level in order to pass them on to future generations.

Created in 1979 between the Alpes Maritimes and the Alpes de Haute Provence, the Mercantour National Park's mission is to know and protect the nature, the landscapes and all the heritage that justified its classification as a National Park. Its role is also to "share the exception" by raising awareness of the need for the protection of the environment through the dissemination of its knowledge and the invitation to discovery.

Before you go on a hike in the Park, check out rules

Fort de tournoux - -la-Condamine

250 years of history…

The Valley was, for 250 years, disputed between France and Savoy.

The frontier was sometimes at the entrance of the valley (the fort of Saint-Vincent-les-Forts and the citadel of Seyne then controlled this border on the French side), sometimes at the Larche pass ; even beyond the passes.

From the middle to the end of the twentieth century, large construction sites spread over 35 km of successive defenses with, as the node of the sipositif, the huge fortified mountain of Tournoux.

Between the wars, the program of the Maginot line concerned the valleys with several large structures and a line of outposts.

The history and heritage of Ubaye lead to the discovery of fortifications.

This very rich military history is explained by the geographical situation of the Valley, crossroads between Piedmont, Savoy and Provence.

The great campaigns of fortifications modernize the valley and the life of its inhabitants : opening of roads (col de la Cayolle…), new means of communication, electrification.

Vaubant was the first to mark the landscape by building Fort Saint-Vincent-les-Forts, at the time when the Ubaye was still Savoyard ?

This fortification of assembly will be completed around 1880 by a series of books : batteries of Chaudon and Chatelard (La Condamine) and battery of the Col Bas in Dormillouse (Le Lauzet).

Around 1930, the Maginot line completed this fortified device.

After the French occupation of Italy in the 19th century, the battery of Viraysse (Larche), the highest in France (2,772 m) and Fort Tournoux (La Condamine) were erected.

This last, true wall developing on a height difference of 700 m, supervised the passages between the Italian valley of the Stura and the collar of Vars.

In Meyronnes, the works of Saint-Ours haut, Saint-Ours bas and Roche-la-Croix, turned towards the Larche pass, are exemplary of the military construction techniques of the time.

Recommendations for visits :

Warm clothing and closed shoes are expected for visits to the structures of Saint-Ours haut and Roche-la-Croix.

Wear closed shoes, a hat or a cap and a flashlight or headlamp for Fort Tournoux, battery of the Caurres.

The fortified sites are private places accessible only accompanied by a guide of the Association for the valorization of the inheritance of the valley of the Ubaye.

Picturesque chalets with fustes (the fuste is the upper part of a chalet with walls made of stacked-up tree trunks, where harvested forage was dried and stored over winter), a listed church and old houses topped with larch shingle or lauze roofs characterise the different hamlets of Saint-Véran. Walking around you will also discover charming wooden fountains, chapels, sundials, wayside crosses, communal ovens and an old fire engine.

Worth visiting: La Vieille Maison Traditionnelle (traditional old house) and Soum museum, located in the oldest house in Saint-Véran.

In winter, the village of Saint-Véran turns into a pleasant winter sports resort, ideal for a family holiday.

A villa and a museum - collections open to the world

In a typical Mexican villa, you will discover collections open to the world. Do not be surprised by crossing the porch with Doric collones of the villa La Sapinière (1878) which houses since 1988 the Museum of the Valley - Museum of France, to cross objects from Asia, Africa and of course of America.

They all have a history, closely related to the life of the inhabitants of Ubaye : 1000 small masterpieces of Mexico tells the popular culture of the land of emigrant emigrants barcelonnettes in Mexico who brought the emblematic objects ; statues and various works by Chaine, Japan and Brimanie, brought together by the Barcelonnette traveler-naturalist Emile Chabrand (1843-1893) at the end of his tour of the world and placed in his recently reconstituted "cabinet of curiosities".

Seven mountain passes in the valley ; in the center, Barcelonnette with 4,000 km of circuits and itineraries from the Italian border to Lake Serre-Ponçon.

Iconic passes : Col de Pontis (1301 m), Col Saint Jean (1333 m), Col d'Allos (2250 m), Col de la Cayolle (2326 m), Col de la Bonette (2802 m), Col de Vars (2109 m), Col de Larche (1909 m)

A favorite terrain for mountain biking, the Ubaye Valley offers more than 340 km of marked trails and a 100-kilometer "Transubayenne" mountain bike track that crosses the valley and partly follows an old railway and its tunnels !

With its ffc homologated site, its Transubayenne track using the tunnels of a railroad that never saw the light of day, its confidential courses in the forest or closer to the peaks, that's something to please MTB enthusiasts !

Unique park that it consists of 12 sections of different levels, because we enjoy winding descents through the pastures, because the passage under the fortress of Tournoux is not insensitive to the military history of France and that the crossing in the tunnels of the old railway is seen as an explorer's experience.

From the walk with family or friends, to the raid of several days, discover all these routes, cross the valley and discover the villages through the Transubayenne mountain bike trail.

Also on the menu, downhill slopes all levels in resort, Pra Loup for example, with access by lifts. Adrenaline guaranteed !

"Take the height", take a step back on the daily, shape another look at the world…

In a nutshell, these are the impressions we gather when we question those who "land" after a baptism in paragliding, gliding or a flight discovered by plane.

From the end of the winter, many enthusiasts flock from all over Europe to the aerodrome of Saint-Pons - Barcelonnette to enjoy the joys of free flight, which is so aptly named.

And throughout the year, paragliders brighten up the Ubayan sky.

"The flight of initiation and discovery is intended to make you discover the gliding and the highest summits of the valley of the Ubaye. For the reasons of aerology, the flights are carried out rather in medium after- midday.

A discovery flight can cause total dependence on gliding. "

Discover the Valley on a motorbike…

Great panoramas…

In Ubaye, as in all the alpine massif, the bitumen ignores the straight line, narrow and winding, kneaded by the mountain.

It's all the happiness that the motaurds find on our roads, from Easter to All Saints' Day.

Many of them look for new horizons on two wheels, beyond our passes.

Crossing the natural parks of the Alpi Maritime or Mercantour, crossing the Alpine passes of Vars or Magdalena, aka Larche, the mythical Bonette, Cayolle, Allos and others, the pilot may well catch the dizzy !

The road is wonderful, peaceful, cajoling…

On the hillside, hamlets and villages of the valley s'égrènent anchor ports dreamed after hours of dust and heat, including that of the exhaust that tickles the calf. It's time to stop.

It is at the most narrow valleys and parades that the Ubaye begins, in the East as in the West, bathed by the eponymous river which hints at its tumults.

In troubled water, hydrospeeds move like corks. Since the D900, one "pulls one last wad" with a rafting evolving on the Unaye. A refreshing break is necessary in the villages of Saint-Paul, Jausiers or on the rock of the bell tower of Méolans. At Barcelonnette, the feet finally resume service in the pedestrian streets of the "capital", near the villas built by the emigrants of the nineteenth century, on their return from Mexico. Something magical…

Try to approach the stags of the Mercantour National Park during a guided hike to listen to their bellowing !

It is at the beginning of autumn, from mid-September to the end of October, that the reproduction period of the stags and hinds takes place. This is also the best time to try to approach them thanks to the famous cry of the stag, the bellow, which makes them easier to locate in the forest. Stay discreet and keep your ears open, binoculars in hand to try to spot them !

Accompanied by a Rando Terres d'Azur guide who knows the Mercantour National Park like the back of his hand, you will go for a 3.5 hours hike in the woods with their changing colors as autumn sets in. Among the trees with yellow, orange and brown foliage, you will progress in the corners of the Haut-Verdon where the deer like to be heard. While making your way, your guide will tell you about this shy animal living in the Mercantour National Park.

At the meeting point in Colmars, also called Colmars-les-Alpes, you will leave by car to reach the starting point of this hike in the Mercantour National Park. Nature and animal lovers will be delighted with this experience, which can only be done during a limited period of the year, which makes it even more attractive !
