A masterpiece of classic architecture

Masterpiece of Classical art, the Palace of Versailles was built in the 17th century and attracts visitors from all over the world. This majestic building, the symbol of splendour and excess, played host to many events and prestigious parties during the French monarchy.

Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, this vast palace – boasting 700 rooms and 2,513 windows! – was built in two important stages. The original palace, formerly a royal hunting lodge consisting of the buildings currently surrounding the famous Marble Courtyard, was built in 1623 during the reign of Louis XIII, father of Louis XIV. Once in power, the Sun King Louis XIV asked his architect Louis Le Vau to renovate the palace (1661 to 1668). He subsequently decided it was too small so asked Le Vau to extend it (1668 to 1670). The extended palace is the one that stands today, containing the sumptuous State Apartments.

Not to be missed is the tour of the interior for the wonderful rooms and impressive furniture and art collections.

The famous Hall of Mirrors, decorated with 357 mirrors, is a masterpiece in itself. This hall was considered the height of luxury in the 17th century, and revolutionary because guests could admire themselves completely.

The tour continues through the Battles Gallery, which contains paintings depicting France's major military events, the Chapel dedicated to St Louis, the King's and Queen's Apartments and the Royal Opera House.

Named after the battle that took place in 1823 in Spain, this popular Parisian spot impresses visitors with its 93,930 m² of parkland as well as its magnificent views of the Eiffel Tower.

A wonderful place for a stroll, its English-style gardens full of plant varieties stretch from one end of the Chaillot Palace to another. Located in Paris' 16th arrondissement, near the Metro station of the same name, the Trocadéro has a magnificent set of water jets as well as its marvellous views of the "Iron Lady" (as locals refer to the Eiffel Tower). Equipped with twenty water cannons, the famous Fountain of Warsaw (Fontaine de Varsovie) offers a beautiful aquatic spectacle, especially at night when it's lit up to emphasise the basin and the surrounding area. There are also many sculptures dotted about the Trocadéro Gardens, such as the Man by Traverse, the Woman by Bacqué and the monumental bull's head.

A refreshing green space with many attractions!

Formerly the hunting ground of the French kings, the Boulogne Wood (Bois de Boulogne) in the 16th arrondissement of Paris is nowadays a vast park that's very popular with Parisians and passing visitors. Although its reputation is sometimes slightly tarnished by its nocturnal goings-on, it is above all the biggest outdoor relaxation area in the west of the capital, covering 846 hectares.

Accessible by Metro via the Porte Maillot station, this breath of fresh air for the city also encompasses the famous Bagatelle Park, a delightful English-style garden with a magnificent rose garden of over 1,200 different varieties, as well as a charming little 18th-century castle. A gem of the decorative arts, the latter was built as a bet between Marie-Antoinette and her brother-in-law the Count of Artois, in just 64 days!

Not far from there, between the Lower Lake and the Bagatelle Park, the Pré-Catalan Garden delights walkers. This botanical park is indeed full of lovely plant varieties, like the copper beech, sequoia and magnolia grandiflora. It also has buildings dating back to the time of Louis XIV, such as the old dairy, the Pré-Catalan restaurant and the theatre of greenery.

Little ones and their parents will love the Acclimatisation Garden (Jardin d'Acclimatation), a green space with entertainment ranging from a little train to pony rides, through the Enchanted River, Guignol theatre, acrobatics course and children's play areas. Nearby at 8 avenue du Mahatma Gandhi, art-lovers will find their heart's content by visiting the very modern Louis Vuitton Foundation for contemporary creativity. The building, designed to resemble a yacht or ship by Frank Gehry, first opened in 2014. To the south-east of the Boulogne Wood, the Auteuil Greenhouse Garden enchants botany enthusiasts, with its collections of rare plants and remarkable trees!

The lakes and streams in this vast expanse of woodland make it an ideal place for a walk with your family or beloved, especially near the Lower Lake, where you can take a boat ride. Yet the Boulogne Wood also has 28 kilometres of horse-riding trails, 15 kilometres of cycle paths and many pedestrian paths, making it a paradise for joggers and walkers. For a little break, there are plenty of picnic areas, refreshment stands and restaurants. And if you enjoy horse-racing, bear in mind that the Auteuil and Longchamp racecourses are found to the south of the Boulogne Wood, so you can treat yourself to that experience.

In an intimate setting bathed in soft light are nearly 3,500 objects from all over the world, all wonderfully showcased, ranging from textiles to masks, through sculptures, musical instruments, jewellery and totems. The two mezzanines overlooking the collection area regularly host temporary exhibitions.

A unique place entirely devoted to science!

In the Champs-Élysées district, not far from the Petit Palais, stands a bastion of scientific culture, the famous Palace of Discovery (Palais de la découverte). Based in a wing of the Grand Palais, a magnificent Belle Époque building constructed for the 1900 World's Fair, this museum and scientific cultural centre is for experienced scientists and novices alike. It houses permanent exhibitions about astronomy and astrophysics, chemistry, geoscience, mathematics, physics and life sciences.

To discover or rediscover the physical sciences in a lively and appealing way, there are interactive experiences and spectacular demonstrations in the Electrostatic, Electromagnetism, Mechanics, Heat and Fluids and Sounds and Vibrations rooms. And if you want to reach for the stars, head to the planetarium, with its cupola measuring 15 metres in diameter. It's a fantastic place where you can observe celestial phenomena and get to grips with astronomy!

As well as being a place of fun and entertainment, the Palace of Discovery also offers workshops for young ones, with amazing experiences for children over eight. Conferences and temporary exhibitions are also organised regularly.

Its collection of Impressionist art is the biggest in the world!

You can't miss the famous Orsay Museum, one of the most famous museums in the world, located in Paris' 7th arrondissement. Accessible by Metro or RER train via the Solférino and Musée d'Orsay stations, this exceptional site is based in the former Orsay station, which opened for the World's Fair in 1900 and whose décor lends its own special charm to the whole complex. A large gallery, immense glass roofs, a majestic clock… the setting of the place is impressive in its own right!

Yet Orsay is above all the museum of western art from 1848 to 1914. A real declaration of love for Impressionism and the Post-Impressionist movement, the Orsay Museum offers marvellous collections of paintings for its enchanted visitors to admire, as well as sculptures, decorative arts and photographs. There are many masterpieces on display, with creations by masters such as Monet, Cézanne, Degas, Manet, Renoir, Gauguin, Van Gogh and Rodin.

Now fully renovated, since autumn 2011 the Orsay Museum has had a new temporary exhibition space, an amazing cafe with an "aquatic dreamland" theme and around 2,000 m² more space devoted to the decorative arts!

A haven of peace devoted to the famous sculptor…

In the famous French-style garden of the Biron Mansion, not far from the Eiffel Tower and Les Invalides in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, you can admire some of the most beautiful sculptures by one of France's greatest artists, Auguste Rodin. Some are especially famous, like The Thinker, The Burghers of Calais and The Gates of Hell.

The visit to the Rodin Museum then continues inside the elegant 18th-century mansion, which is a listed Historic Monument. Here, you can enjoy other works by the great master, such as The Kiss, as well as pieces by his muse Camille Claudel, like The Waltz and The Wave.

Be sure to take a look at the impressive Marble Gallery, which is aptly named, as well as the old chapel. The latter, inaugurated in 2005 after several years of renovation work, contains an area for temporary exhibitions, as well as an auditorium and a book and gift shop on the theme of sculpture and the works of Rodin.

Situated in an unspoiled environment in the heart of the Upper Chevreuse Valley Regional Nature Park, in Choisel, the Château de Breteuil was built in the 17th century, then extended in the 18th and 19th centuries, and has been lived in by the Breteuil family since 1712. On your tour, you will also see a wealth of other furniture, family souvenirs and historic scenes brought to life by wax figures.

Around the château, the magnificent park stretching over 75 hectares is great for romantic walks with its formal gardens, its box tree maze, its Princes garden with multiple varieties of flowers, its charming ponds and its centuries-old trees.
